Ljubicic Wins Marseille Opener

Marseille, France

Seppi© Yohan Brandt - Open 13Andreas Seppi lost to fellow Italian Flavio Cipolla in the first round.

Seventh seed Ivan Ljubicic, who reached the 2005 final (l. to J. Johansson), defeated Florent Serra of France 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3 on Monday at the Open 13 in Marseille.

Ljubicic improved to 5-0 lifetime against World No. 143 Serra, after hitting 27 aces and saving all three break points he faced for victory in two hours and nine minutes. The 32-year-old Croatian is making his 10th appearance at the ATP World Tour 250 indoor tournament (10-9 overall).

"First and second set, I was serving really well," said Ljubicic. "I never felt in trouble in terms of can I lose this; it was just after the second set because I felt like it would have been nice if I closed it in two. I was struggling in the third, the court is pretty quick. Of course, not playing a lot of matches makes things a little bit more difficult.

"It was great to get a win. This year was difficult for me. I had some tough losses, tough matches, so it's really nice to be back to winning ways."

Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, currently No. 95 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, won his Marseille opener for a second straight year as he defeated Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 7-6(4). Nieminen, a titlist last month in Sydney, had reached the quarter-finals the past two weeks in Montpellier (l. to Gasquet) and Rotterdam (l. to Federer).

In a meeting between two Italians, Flavio Cipolla defeated No. 8 seed Andreas Seppi 6-4, 7-6(4) in one hour and 48 minutes. Seppi went 0 for 7 on his break point opportunities.
