Fifth seed Florian Mayer of Germany advanced to the second round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Argentine qualifier Facundo Bagnis on Monday in Acapulco.
The 18th-ranked Mayer, who is making his debut at this ATP World Tour 500 tournament, went three for four on his break point opportunities while saving all five faced on serve to close out the victory in one hour and 13 minutes.
He will look to post back-to-back wins for the first time this season when he next plays Spain’s Pablo Andujar, who accounted for Argentine Leonardo Mayer 7-6(5), 6-3 in just under two hours.
Seventh-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers, an Acapulco quarter-finalist in 2008 (l. to Acasuso), defeated Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-2 with four breaks of serve.
Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela was untroubled in his first-round match, dismissing Mexican wild card Cesar Ramirez 6-0, 6-2 in one hour and 10 minutes. The 33-year-old Chela won his first ATP World Tour title at this tournament in 2000 (d. Puerta) when it was held in Mexico City, and reclaimed the title seven years later in Acapulco (d. Moya).
