Australian Bernard Tomic, the No. 8 seed, dismissed 2006 champion Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3 on Monday at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

Haas, the oldest player in the draw at 33 years of age, took the early lead as he capitalised on his first break point opportunity, but the 19-year-old Tomic went on to break the German three times to secure the one hour, 11-minute victory.

"Tommy played really well in the first few games and managed to break me, and I was a little bit tight," said Tomic. "After I started to free up, I started to play better, hit the ball harder and he started missing a little bit more."

Tomic comes into his Delray Beach debut at No. 37 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings. He opened the 2012 season by reaching the Brisbane semi-finals  (l. to Murray) and fourth round at the Australian Open (l. to Federer).

Ryan Sweeting needed just 52 minutes to defeat fellow American Donald Young 6-1, 6-1, converting on five of his nine break points and winning 91 per cent of his first serve points.

The 82nd-ranked Sweeting is making his fourth main draw appearance at this ATP World Tour 250 tournament. He reached the quarter-finals last year as a qualifier (l. to Nishikori).

Uzbekistani Denis Istomin, a finalist two weeks ago in San Jose (l. to Raonic), saved all seven break points faced on serve en route to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Australian Matthew Ebden. Also in early action Monday, Israeli Dudi Sela dismissed American wild card Denis Kudla, 6-4, 6-3.
