WEDNESDAY PREVIEW – NO. 1 DJOKOVIC, SEVEN-TIME CHAMP NADAL BEGIN CLAY CAMPAIGNS
• Five Top 10 players play their second round matches today at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, with the World No. 1 and tournament’s seven-time defending champion (and World No. 2) among those in action.

 • First on Court Central is No. 9 seed Gilles Simon against Portuguese qualifier Frederico Gil; Simon has been to the quarter-finals or better seven times at ATP Masters 1000 events, but never on clay - he hopes to take one step further to making that breakthrough here as he takes on Gil, who has lost both of his previous matches against Simon in straight sets. But he does hold one thing over his fellow 27-year-old, reachin his first (and so far only) ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final right here in Monte Carlo one year ago.

• Next up is World No. 1 and local resident Novak Djokovic against Italy’s Andreas Seppi; Djokovic may not have had the perfect start to the year he had in 2011, but he has still compiled a sparkling 20-2 record so far in 2012, defending his Australian Open and Miami titles and falling in the semi-finals of title defenses at Dubai and Indian Wells. He did not play Monte Carlo last year but did play here the five years before that, reaching one final (2009) and two semi-finals (2008 and 2010). He plays his opening match against Seppi, holding a 6-0 lifetime (though they haven’t played each other in almost three years).

• Next up is World No. 2 Rafael Nadal against Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen; Nadal has completely dominated this tournament, winning it the last seven years since losing in the third round in 2003 as a 16-year-old to Guillermo Coria. Then after missing the event in 2004, he has won every year since ‘05. He has an amazing 39-1 lifetime mark, winning 37 in a row, and looks to reach 40 wins as he takes on Nieminen, against whom he is 6-0 against, including a 69-minute, 62 62 rout in this same round here last year; also, in his entire career Nadal has only lost five matches to lefties, but never on clay (two losses on grass and three losses on hard courts).

• Last up is No. 5 seed David Ferrer against Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci; Ferrer has had an excellent season so far, his 24-3 record including three ATP World Tour titles, and now he returns to one of his favorite stops, having made the quarter-finals or better here six times before (his most at any ATP Masters 1000 event). He was a finalist here last year, one of three ATP Masters 1000 finals he has reached (also Shanghai last year and Rome in 2010); now playing his first ATP World Tour event as a 30-year-old (he turned 30 on April 2) he faces Bellucci, against whom he is 3-0, winning all three previous meetings in straight sets (two on clay).

• There are nine other matches around the grounds, including No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic (vs. Marin Cilic), No. 7 seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia (vs. Albert Montanes), No. 12 Kei Nishikori of Japan (vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu), No. 15 Jurgen Melzer of Austria (vs. Julien Benneteau) and No. 16 Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine (vs. Bernard Tomic).
