Munich, Belgrade, Estoril Wednesday Briefing

MUNICH WEDNESDAY PREVIEW – TOP SEED TSONGA & FOUR FORMER TOP 10 PLAYERS IN ACTION

• The World No. 5 and four former Top 10 players are among an all-star line-up as the second round begins Wednesday at the BMW Open, an ATP World Tour 250 event that started way back in 1974.

• First up is No. 3 seed Marin Cilic against Germany’s Matthias Bachinger; former World No. 9 Cilic has always done well in Munich, reaching the quarter-finals or better all four times he has played here (making one final in 2010 and three quarter-finals in 2008-09 and 2011). Bachinger comes into this match on a high though, fresh off his first career ATP World Tour semi-final in Bucharest last week and beating tough clay courter Alejandro Falla in the first round. Cilic and Bachinger is a first-time meeting.

• Next on is German qualifier Dustin Brown against No. 8 seed Marcos Baghdatis in a first-time meeting. Like Cilic, Baghdatis has done well here in the past, falling early last year but reaching the semi-finals in both of his other previous appearances, in 2007 and ‘10 (falling to Cilic that year). After a three-set win over Tobias Kamke, former World No. 8 Baghdatis will play another German in the second round, and Brown will be going for his first career ATP World Tour clay court quarter-final (he has already gone that far on hard and grass).

• Next up is top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against German wild card Tommy Haas. Tsonga, who is currently at a career-high ranking of No. 5, is making his first appearance in Munich and is going for his first career ATP World Tour clay court title here. Haas, a former World No. 2 currently working his way back up the rankings after a lengthy struggle with injuries, is playing here for the first time in five years but does have good memories from this event, his best result being a runner-up finish back in 2000. Tsonga and Haas have split their two career meetings but this will be their first meeting on clay courts.

• Last up is No. 6 seed Mikhail Youzhny against Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo. Youzhny, a former World No. 8, is 20-7 lifetime in Munich, winning the title in 2010 and reaching two other finals, in 2007 (losing to Kohlschreiber) and 2009 (losing to Berdych). After a first round win over Philipp Petzschner he now goes for his sixth quarter-final here against Giraldo, whom he beat routinely (60 61) in their only previous ATP World Tour meeting two years ago in Cincinnati.
