Madrid Friday Briefing

Madrid, Spain

• After three-set scares in their opening rounds, the World No. 1 and World No. 3 had simpler wins in the round of 16 and are now in the quarter-finals, one win away from a blockbuster semi-final clash. Overall, six of the top 11 players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings are remaining.

• First up on Manolo Santana is No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych against No. 15 seed Fernando Verdasco; Berdych was the most devastating player in the third round on Thursday, needing just 50 minutes to beat No. 12 seed Gael Monfils, 61 61; but the most impressive victory of the day was Verdasco’s, a 63 36 75 thriller over No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal, rallying from 5-2 down in the third set to score his first victory in 14 career meetings with the 10-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1; Berdych leads the overall series, 9-4, but they are an even 2-2 on clay (with Verdasco winning their last two clay court meetings).

• In the evening session, an all-Serbian clash between World No. 1 Novak Djokovic against No. 7 seed Janko Tipsarevic, who has had to battle over two and a half hours in both of his matches so far this week but he is still standing, and has been rewarded with his first ATP Masters 1000 clay court quarter-final. This is Djokovic’s sixth quarter-final of the season (he is 5-0 in QF matches) and the World No. 1 leads the head-to-head, 4-1, winning their only clay court meeting (at Belgrade in 2009). Tipsarevic is 1-5 in his career against World No. 1s (the win coming against Djokovic at last year’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London).

• Next is No. 3 seed Roger Federer against No. 5 seed David Ferrer in a match up of three-time ATP World Tour winners this season. After a scare in his opening match against Milos Raonic, Federer was in top form in his round of 16 match against Richard Gasquet, needing just 58 minutes to dispatch the No. 14 seed, 63 62 (Gasquet had won two of their three previous clay court meetings). Next up is Ferrer, who fought off three match points to beat No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro on Thursday and win his 30th match of the season - the first player to reach that milestone; the head-to-head between these two 30-year-olds swings completely in Federer’s favor though, 12-0 (and 25-3 in sets) - but two of Ferrer’s three career sets against Federer came in their four clay court meetings.

• On Stadium 3, No. 10 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina takes a 2-0 career advantage against No. 16 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. Del Potro has the edge in experience, this being his 10th ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final (has a  4-5 mark) and he’s also undefeated on clay (9-0) this season. Dolgopolov is in just his second ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final (at Shanghai last October).
