MONDAY PREVIEW – ALMAGRO, FORMER CHAMP FERRERO HIGHLIGHT SANTANA COURT ACTION

• There are eight first round matches on Monday’s schedule, including No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro and former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero on Manolo Santana Court. Overall, there are five Spaniards involved in the eight matches.

• The first men’s match on Santana is Almagro against Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo. Almagro has won the four previous meetings, three in a decisive third set, and their lone clay court match came in the quarter-finals of Acapulco last year and the Spaniard prevailed in three sets. They played twice earlier this season in Auckland in January and at the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells in March with Almagro winning a third set tie-break. Almagro is co-leader (w/Ferrer) on the ATP World Tour with the most clay court match wins (16) this season.  Giraldo, who is the top Colombian ranked No. 53, is 16-11 on the season, including 9-6 on clay.  His best result is the semi-finals in Acapulco.

• In the second match on, Russian qualifier Igor Andreev takes on Ferrero, who has won five of the previous six meetings (3-1 on clay). Andreev won the first meeting at Roland Garros in 2004 and then Ferrero won the next five encounters, all in straight sets (10-0). Andreev, who is 0-3 in Madrid, finished last season No. 115 and he’s worked his way up to No. 77 with one semi-final and one quarte-final showing.  Ferrero is playing his first match since Feb. 28 after missing more than two months with a wrist injury. The 32-year-old Spaniard is 1-5 on the season and ranked No. 49.

• On Arantxa Sanchez Vicario Court, there are four  matches, leading off with former Top 10 Russian Mikhail Youzhny against 20-year-old wild card Javier Marti followed by Urkainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky against American wild card Ryan Harrison, who turns 20 years old today. Stakhovsky won the previous meeting in a fifth set tie-break in the second round at the US Open in 2010. In the third match on, Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla meets Argentine veteran Juan Ignacio Chela, who has won two of the previous three meetings (1-1 on clay). In the final match on, former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus squares off with wild card Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who won the previous meeting in Indian Wells five years ago.
