WEDNESDAY PREVIEW - NADAL, FEDERER & FERRER MAKE OPENING APPEARANCES
• The Mutua Madrid Open continues Wednesday, with three Top 10 stars, including two former World No. 1s, taking Manolo Santana Court in their first matches of the week after first round byes.
• First up is No. 5 seed David Ferrer against the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek. Not only has Ferrer already won an equal-personal best three ATP World Tour titles this year, he has been particularly strong on clay, compiling a 16-2 win-loss and winning two of those titles on this surface (Buenos Aires and Acapulco);. He leads the head-to-head with Stepanek, 5-3, but Ferrer had to go to five sets to win their last two clay court meetings, and in their only other clay court meeting, Stepanek won (at Rome in 2008).
• Next is World No. 2 Rafael Nadal against Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko; Nadal is a perfect 10-0 on clay this year (and 20-0 in sets) and if you look back since leaving Madrid last year, he is 21-0 on clay (and 53-4 in sets); but former World No. 3 Davydenko has been one of his toughest opponents over the years, the Russian leading their head-to-head, 6-4, and winning their last four meetings (one of only two players ever to beat Nadal four times in a row, alongside Novak Djokovic); but Nadal has won all three of their clay court meetings, the last two quite handily (winning them both by routine 63 62 scorelines).
• At night, World No. 3 Roger Federer faces Canada’s Milos Raonic; Federer is playing his first match since a surprise early exit in Miami to Andy Roddick on Mar. 26, but despite that loss Federer has some staggering numbers as of late, going 40-3 since last year’s US Open and winning 77 of his last 78 matches against players outside the Top 20 (the loss to Roddick the only blemish); World No. 23 Raonic scored his best career win in Barcelona two weeks ago against World No. 4 Andy Murray, but he has never had a win over a Top 3 player, and Federer won their only previous meeting in March in Indian Wells in three sets.
• On Arantxa Sanchez Vicario Court, there are four matches and three on Stadium 3. Leading of on Sanchez Vicario is No. 15 seed and Madrid native Fernando Verdasco against Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla in a first-time ATP World Tour meeting. In the next match, No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro brings a 5-0 career mark against countryrman Marcel Granollers and that is followed by Mikhail Youzhny against No. 10 seed Juan Martin del Potro, who won the previous two meetings. In the final match, No. 9 seed Gilles Simon takes a 2-0 mark against Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
CLAY COURT DOMINATOR – Nadal has the best career match record on clay in the Open Era with a 241-18 mark (.931) and he’s 34-4 in clay finals. Here's a year-by-year look at Nadal's clay court supremacy since 2005, compiling a 214-8 match record (.964) and 33-4 mark in clay court finals on the ATP World Tour:
