Mirnyi/Nestor, Poles Scrape Through

Rome, Italy

Top seed Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor clawed into the quarter-finals of the Internazionali BNL D'Italia Thursday after a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win over Italian duo Gianluca Naso and Filippo Volandri. Mirnyi and Nestor, who recently moved into a tie for the No. 1 ATP Doubles Ranking, will play Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in the quarter-finals.

The Indian duo late Thursday breezed through its opening round match with Italians Daniele Bracciali ad Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-1. Earlier in the day Seppi had toiled for more than three hours to beat Stanislas Wawrinka to reach the singles quarter-finals.

'Polish Power' Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, who last week won the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Madrid, also needed three sets Thursday to reach the quarter-finals. The Poles upset former Wimbledon champions Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 after firing six aces and cropping just four points on first serve.
