TUESDAY PREVIEW– REIGNING CHAMP DJOKOVIC, MURRAY, TSONGA, FERRER IN OPENING ACTION

• Four of the top six players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings highlight Tuesday’s action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, led by the World No. 1 and defending champion on Centrale. In addition, the No. 4, 5 and 6 ranked players play their opening match after a first round bye. Overall there are eight first round and five second round matches on the schedule.

• In a first round match on Centrale, the No. 1 player from Poland, Lukasz Kubot, takes on local wild card Potito Starace, who has won the previous four meetings. Kubot is making his third straight appearance in Rome and last year he qualified and reached the second round, losing to eventual winner Novak Djokovic. He was ranked No. 141 last year and this week he’s No. 54. Starace is appearing in the tournament for the eighth straight year  (8-7) and he’s won at least one round six times. His best results are the third round in 2007 and last year.

• In the next match, former World No. 3 David Nalbandian meets No. 4 Andy Murray, who has a 4-2 career advantage over the Argentine, winning the past four meetings. This will be their first encounter on clay. Nalbandian, who is playing in Rome for the first time in four years, has an 11-6 career mark here, reaching the final in 2004 (l. to Moya)  and semi-finals in ’06 (l. to Federer). Murray, a semi-finalist last year (l. to Djokovic), is making his seventh straight trip to Rome (6-7 mark). The 24-year-old Scot is playing in his third clay court tournament of the year (4-2 mark). Last week he withdrew from Madrid due to a back injury.

• In the evening session, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic begins his title defence against Aussie teenager Bernard Tomic. Djokovic won the previous meeting in four sets in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year. Djokovic is coming off a quarter-final last week in Madrid. He enters with a 26-4 match record on the season with a pair of titles at the Australian Open and Miami. The 19-year-old Tomic is the youngest player in the Top 50 on the ATP World Tour and he is ranked No. 32 this week. He is 2-8 lifetime against Top 10 players and this is the second time he’s facing a World No. 1. At last year’s Australian Open he lost to Rafael Nadal in the third round.

• On SuperTennis Arena, all three matches feature a Top 10 player as No. 6 David Ferrer opens the order of play against countryman Fernando Verdasco.  The series is tied 7-7 but Ferrer has won the past three meetings in straight sets. Verdasco holds a 6-4 lead on clay. In the next match, No. 10 seed and No. 9 ranked Juan Martin del Potro brings a 3-0 mark against Frenchman Michael Llodra. In the  evening match,Viktor Troicki enters with a 3-1 record against No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, although the Frenchman won their lone clay meeting here two years ago.
