Fourth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek made a winning start at Wimbledon Thursday, dismissing lucky losers Colin Ebelthite and John Peers 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Paes and Stepanek won 87 per cent of their first serve points and broke the Australian pair five times to advance in one hour and 36 minutes.

The Australian Open champions are bidding to lift their third trophy of the season, and will play Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram next.

Two-time defending finalists Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau prevailed in three tie-breaks to edge Lukas Dlouhy and Michal Mertinak 7-6(7), 7-6(5), 7-6(4). The fifth seeds are coming off a triumph at the UNICEF Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Wild cards Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt upset No. 6 seeds Alexander Peya and Nenad Zimonjic 7-6(3), 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(3). Both teams won 150 points in a first-round meeting that lasted two hours and 56 minutes.

Ninth seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez also bowed out in their opener, falling to Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen. The wild card pair won 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-5.

Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas, the 12th seeds, defeated wild cards Liam Broady and Oliver Golding 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, hitting 19 winners to eight unforced errors.

Americans Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram overcame a one-set deficit on two occasions to battle past Paul Hanley and Mark Knowles 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in three hours and six minutes.
