Spaniard Tommy Robredo, the 2006 and 2008 Skistar Swedish Open champion, presented organisers with the 2011 ATP World Tour 250 Tournament Of The Year Award on Monday prior to his first-round victory over Adrian Ungur of Romania. The Spaniard defeated the eighth-seeded Ungur 6-4, 6-2, winning 81 per cent of points on first serve and converting three of his six break points.
The Skistar Swedish Open continues to excel in the ATP World Tour 250 category, triumphing for a remarkable 10th consecutive year (2002-11).
"For us players when we are travelling all the year round, and when we go to one place and we feel at home it means that you deserve the trophy," explained Robredo, "so that’s why I’m voting for this tournament and a lot of my friends are voting this tournament."
The 30-year-old Robredo claimed his first tour-level win of the season. The former World No. 5 has dropped to No. 199 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, having only recently returned to action on the ATP Challenger Tour following a lengthy injury lay-off.
Estonian Jurgen Zopp, competing at a career-high No. 84 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, improved to 4-5 at tour-level this year with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Swedish wild card Christian Lindell in 89 minutes.
Czech Jan Hajek converted three of his five break point opportunities to beat Frederico Delbonis of Argentina 7-6(3), 6-3 in just over 90 minutes.
