Third seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky battled into the semi-finals of the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Thursday as they edged Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Gilles Muller 7-6(6), 6-7(3), 10-7 in 87 minutes.
The Mexican/American pairing are through to their first semi-final together since winning the Barcelona title (d. Bryans) on their team debut in April 2011. Gonzalez reached the final in Newport two years ago, finishing runner-up with Travis Rettenmaier (l. to Ball/Guccione).
For a place in the final they will face South Africans Raven Klaasen and Izak Van der Merwe, who dismissed John Paul Fruttero and Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-2 in 55 minutes.
There were mixed results for the seeded teams on Thursday at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart. In an all-German quarter-final clash, wild cards Martin Emmrich and Bjorn Phau ousted top seeds Dustin Brown and Christopher Kas 6-7(3), 6-2, 10-3 in 78 minutes.
Brown and Kas were joined on the casualty list by second seeds Michael Kohlmann and Philipp Petzschner of Germany, who lost their first-round match to Italian/French duo Alessandro Motti and Benoit Paire 7-6(5), 6-1 in 64 minutes. Petzschner was the defending champion in Stuttgart, having triumphed last year alongside Jurgen Melzer.
The third and fourth seeds fared better. No. 3 Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah battled past Pablo Andujar and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-4 to reach the semi-finals and were joined in the last four by No. 4 seeds Michal Mertinak and Andre Sa, who overcame Tobias Kamke and Philipp Marx 6-3, 6-4.
