Third seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky lifted their second team trophy on Sunday at the Campbell’s Hall Of Fame Tennis Championships, defeating No. 2 seeds Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins 7-6(3), 6-3.
“It means a lot,” said Gonzalez, who finished runner-up two years ago in Newport (w/Rettenmaier). “It’s a great place, I enjoy playing here. I’m happy to come back here and now win it. I hope to come back next year to defend the title.”
Lipsky added, “It’s exciting to win any title. It’s my sixth year here - I’ve made the semis [a couple times] - so it’s nice to get over the hump and win the title. It was a good match today. Those guys played well. They’re a good team and so little determines wins and losses, but we played one good return game and it was enough.”
Gonzalez and Lipsky converted the only break of serve in the match and won 34 of 39 points on their first serves to lock up the final victory in 78 minutes.
The Mexican/American tandem won on their team debut last year at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeating Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the final. Gonzalez improved to 4-2 in ATP World Tour doubles finals, while Lipsky evened his record to 7-7. In March, they also captured an ATP Challenger Tour title in Dallas.
“We’re pretty comfortable with each other,” said Lipsky. “We had a couple good results as well, we won Barcelona last year and a Challenger this year, so we know how each other play and it’s definitely a good way to start our renewed partnership.”
British pair Fleming and Hutchins suffered their first defeat in a tour-level final together, having won all three of their previous title match appearances. They triumphed at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships and AEGON International in Eastbourne earlier this season.
