Teenage wild card Mate Pavic stunned 2010 champion Juan Carlos Ferrero Tuesday at the ATP Vegeta Croatia Open Umag, knocking out the sixth seed 6-2, 6-2.
Pavic broke the Spaniard four times, winning 52 per cent of his return points to clinch the upset in just over one hour.
The 19 year old Pavic, who recorded his first ATP World Tour victory at the UNICEF Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, will play Russian wild card Andrey Kuznetsov for a place in the quarter-finals.
Fifth seed Carlos Berlocq of Argentina broke Croatian Ivan Dodig four times en route to a 6-4, 6-0 victory. The 38th-ranked Berlocq, a finalist earlier this season at the clay-court tournament in Vina del Mar, improves to a 20-17 season record.
Results were mixed for a group of Italians. Fabio Fognini and Potito Starace were on the winning end, as Fognini dismissed Karol Beck 6-3, 6-1, and Starace beat qualifier Ivo Klec 6-3, 7-6(6). Argentine qualifier Marco Trungelliti registered his first tour-level win when he beat Paolo Lorenzi 7-5, 6-4, while Germany’s Daniel Brands advanced past qualifier Walter Trusendi 6-1, 7-6(6).
