HAMBURG MONDAY PREVIEW – THREE FORMER CHAMPIONS IN OPENING DAY ACTION
• The bet-at-home Open - German Tennis Championships 2012, one of 11 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments, features an outstanding field with seven of the Top 25 players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings. The three former champions in the field are in action on Centre Court Monday.
• Leading the way is World No. 10 Nicolas Almagro of Spain, who reached the final last year and is coming off a runner-up effort in Bastad (l. to Ferrer). Almagro leads the ATP World Tour with the most match wins on clay (31) and he’s won two titles. The No. 2 seed is reigning champion Gilles Simon of France, followed by two-time ATP World Tour winner this year Juan Monaco of Argentina, a finalist in Stuttgart on Sunday. The No. 4 seed is Umag champ Marin Cilic, a quarter-finalist here last year. The other seeds are No. 5 Fernando Verdasco of Spain, No. 6 Philipp Kohlschreiber, the top German, No. 7 Florian Mayer, the No. 2 German, and No. 8 Viktor Troicki of Serbia.
• There are three former champions in the draw and the trio are on Centre Court. Leading off the action is Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis against 2006 winner Tommy Robredo, who is 16-8 lifetime in Hamburg. The next match on is another Argentine, Carlos Berlocq, against reigning champ and No. 2 Simon, who owns a 3-2 head-to-head mark but has lost the previous two meetings earlier this year. In the third match on, German wild card Matthias Bachinger meets top Dutchman Robin Haase, who won their previous meeting in February in Zagreb in three sets. In the final match, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland squares off with 2009 champion Nikolay Davydenko, who holds a 3-2 advantage, winning the past three meetings.

ATLANTA TOURNAMENT PREVIEW – ISNER, FISH, ANDERSON, NISHIKORI, RODDICK, TOP FOUR SEEDS
• The BB&T Atlanta Open gets underway Monday at the Atlantic Station with an outstanding field assembled, led by the No. 1-2 American duo of John Isner and Mardy Fish. The two have met in the past two finals here with Fish coming back both times from a set down to win in three sets.
• This is the first ATP World Tour hard court tournament of the North American summer hard court circuit and of the Emirates Airline US Open Series. This is the first of six tournaments leading into the US Open. Fish was the winner of last year’s US Open Series.
• The No. 3 seed is Kei Nishikori of Japan, who is making his Atlanta debut. The top Asian player on the ATP World Tour is ranked No. 19 with a 19-11 match record on the season. The No. 4 seed is Andy Roddick, who reached the semi-finals in Atlanta two years ago. Last month Roddick won his 31st career ATP World Tour title in Eastbourne prior to Wimbledon. It was the 12th straight year he’s won at least one title. The No. 5 seed is top South African Kevin Anderson, who also reached the semis in 2010. The No. 6 seed is Ryan Harrison, who is ranked a career-high No. 43 after his third semi-final of the season in Newport. The No. 7 seed is Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia, the doubles champion last year (w/Ebden) and No. 8 seed is Go Soeda of Japan, who is making his debut.
• On Monday’s Stadium schedule, 19-year-old wild card Jack Sock takes on Bogomolov Jr. in a first-time meeting. Sock won the US Open junior title two years ago and the US Open mixed doubles title last year. In the next match, another wild card, Steve Johnson, who led the Univ. of Southern California to four straight NCAA team titles while winning back-to-back singles crowns, plays local resident Donald Young for the first time. Young is trying to break a 12-match first round losing streak since his last win in Memphis in February. In the final match, Russian Igor Kunitsyn takes on wild card Brian Baker for the first time. Baker is the comeback story of the year after being sidelined for nearly six years after undergoing five surgeries. He comes in ranked No. 79 after his recent fourth round showing at Wimbledon. Prior to Roland Garros, he qualified in Nice and reached his first ATP World Tour final (l. to Almagro).

The ATP is the governing body of the men's professional tennis circuits - the ATP World Tour, the ATP Challenger Tour and the ATP Champions Tour. With 62 tournaments in 31 countries, the ATP World Tour showcases the finest male athletes competing in the world’s most exciting venues. From Australia to Europe and the Americas to Asia, the stars of the ATP World Tour battle for prestigious titles and South African Airways ATP Rankings points at ATP World Tour Masters 1000, 500 and 250 events, as well as Grand Slams (non ATP events). At the end of the season only the world’s top 8 ranked men’s singles players and top 8 doubles teams, based on their performance throughout the year, will qualify to compete for the last title of the season at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
