Washington Friday Briefing: Americans Fish, Querrey & Blake Go For SF Spots

• Three former Top 10 players (including a former World No. 2 and a former World No. 4) are among an all-star final eight at the ATP World Tour-500 level Citi Open, but only four of them will be left after Quarter-Final Friday

• First up on Stadium is an all-German battle between No. 4 seed Tommy Haas and Tobias Kamke; Kamke, who took out No. 7 seed Benoit Paire earlier in the week, is playing his first ATP World Tour quarter-final of the year, but will have to raise his game against Haas, who is 3-0 in ATP World Tour quarter-finals this year; a former World No. 2, Haas has also been rocketing up the rankings this year, starting the season outside the Top 200 but going as high as No. 35 last week (No. 36 this week); this will be a first-time meeting

• Next is No. 1 seed Mardy Fish against Belgium’s Xavier Malisse; Fish is going for his first ATP World Tour semi-final of the year while Malisse is going for his second (he did it on grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch); similarly, Fish is going for his first semi-final here while Malisse is going for his second (he did it in 2010); the two have a close head-to-head, with Fish up 2-1 (losing their only clay court meeting easily and toughing out three set wins in their two hardcourt duels); Malisse hasn’t had a Top 20 win on anything but grass since March 2011 though

• Next up is No. 3 seed Kevin Anderson against No. 8 seed Sam Querrey; Querrey is fresh off his first ATP World Tour title of the year in Los Angeles and has extended his winning streak to six matches in a row with two wins here (over Igor Andreev and Benjamin Becker); Querrey leads the head-to-head, 5-3, though he has lost their last two meetings, earlier this year in the early rounds of Miami (on hard) and Houston (on clay)

• Last up is No. 2 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov against American James Blake; this is a special tournament for Blake, who won his first ATP World Tour title right here 10 years ago (the first of his 10 career ATP World Tour titles, which have all come on hardcourts); now he has revived his year here - before this week he only had one ATP World Tour-level match win on the season, and he has scored two to get to this, his first quarter-final of the year; Dolgopolov, who is making his tournament debut, won the pair’s only previous encounter in straight sets

• This is the third of six ATP World Tour events in the Emirates Airline US Open Series; Atlanta champion Andy Roddick and Los Angeles winner Sam Querrey are currently co-leaders of the Series with 70 points each
