ROGERS CUP 2012
Toronto Tuesday Preview: Canadian No. 1 & American No. 1 Shine Under The Lights
Toronto, Canada
by Greg Sharko
|07.08.2012
• The first round continues and the second round begins at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000-level Rogers Cup on Tuesday, with the American No. 1 and Canadian No. 1 in action on the hard courts of the Rexall Centre. The American-Canadian duo are No. 1-2 in aces on the ATP World Tour this year.
• First up on Stadium is Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin against Canadian wild card Frank Dancevic, a first round match; it has been a difficult last year and a half for former Canadian No. 1 Dancevic, losing 10 of his last 11 ATP World Tour-level matches (dating back to reaching the quarter-finals of Johannesburg last February). But the two-time ATP World Tour finalist has done well here before, reaching the quarter-finals in Montreal five years ago and second round twice. He will try to draw on that in this first-time meeting with Kukushkin.
• Next up is another first round battle, Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson; both players have had strong seasons, each winning an ATP World Tour title and maintaining rankings that will make the cut for a Grand Slam seeding (Youzhny is now No. 30, Anderson No. 32). But since winning his title in Delray Beach in early March the big-serving Anderson has struggled against his ranking class, losing seven of eight matches against fellow Top 40 players; this will be another first-time meeting.
• Next up is Germany’s Tommy Haas against Argentina’s David Nalbandian, another first round match-up and an all-former Top 3 player battle (Haas has been No. 2, Nalbandian No. 3); though neither of them is still in the Top 3, Haas has been soaring up the rankings this year, starting the season outside the Top 200 and now all the at No. 25 already following some sensational results over the last few months, including his first ATP World Tour title in three years at Halle and a pair of 500-level finals at Hamburg and Washington DC. Haas is 3-0 lifetime against Nalbandian, though they haven’t played in over five and a half years.
• Kicking off the night session is No. 16 seed Milos Raonic against Serbia’s Viktor Troicki; Raonic is the face of Canadian tennis, shooting to stardom over the last year and a half with his first three ATP World Tour titles (one last year, two this year). Two years ago when Raonic played in the Rogers Cup, he was ranked No. 217. The big-serving Canadian No. 1, who is No. 2 in aces this year (642) on the ATP World Tour, is now on the verge of the world’s Top 20, just outside at No. 24; though Troicki is currently down at No. 33 he knows what it takes to get to the Top 20, making it as high as No. 12 last season; this is a first-time meeting.
• Wrapping up the night session is No. 8 seed John Isner against Spain’s Pablo Andujar, a second round match; American No. 1 Isner has had a breakthrough season, highlighted by his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells and subsequently breaking the Top 10 (he is now just outside at No. 11). Isner, who leads the ATP World Tour in aces (704), hopes to break a few patterns tonight, as he has fallen in the second round of both previous attempts at this event (in 2009 and 2011) and he has also fallen second round at the last two ATP Masters 1000 events he has played (on the clay of Rome and Madrid earlier this year); this is another first-time meeting.
