Mirnyi/Nestor Lead Seeds Into QFs

Toronto, Canada

Top seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor opened their Rogers Cup campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Fabio Fognini and Juan Monaco on Thursday in Toronto. They became the first team to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with their victory.

Mirnyi/Nestor Qualify For Final Showdown

“It wasn’t the prettiest match,” admitted Nestor. “We got a couple let cords on some key points in the first and second to break… We just hung in there and served well at the right time and saved some break points on some good serves.”

Mirnyi and Nestor, semi-finalists on their team’s Canada debut last year, will play eighth-seeded Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez in the quarter-finals. Granollers and Lopez dismissed Tomas Berdych and Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-2 in 57 minutes.

Third seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski snapped a five-match losing streak, defeating Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky 7-5, 7-5. The Poles are through to the quarter-finals for the third time at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.

Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, the No. 4 seeds, converted three of their four break points to defeat Italians Daniele Bracciali and Andreas Seppi 6-1, 6-4. The Swedish-Romanian duo has reached the final in their past three tournaments, winning the title in Bastad and ‘s-Hertogenbosch and finishing as runners-up at Wimbledon.

They go on to play seventh seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer, who advanced with a 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-5 win over Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Gilles Simon.

All doubles matches were played on indoor courts due to rain.
