Welcome to the Western & Southern Open, the seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the year on the ATP World Tour to be held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

The nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments bring together the best fields in tennis at the most prestigious venues. This year’s field consists of eight of the Top 10 in the August 6 South African Airways ATP Rankings and 1t5 of the Top 20 overall. The last seven champions are in the draw. The top seed is four-time winner (2005, ‘07, ’09-10) Roger Federer, one of three former champions in the draw – Andy Murray (2008, ‘11) and Andy Roddick (2003, ’06). There are four players who have ranked No. 1 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings in the draw – current No. 1 Federer, Novak Djokovic, Lleyton Hewittt and Andy Roddick.

This is one of four hard-court ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in North American (Indian Wells, Miami, Toronto) and three are on clay (Monte-Carlo, Rome, Madrid) while two are later in the year (Shanghai, Paris). The 2012 ATP World Tour ends with the prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the official year-end tournament held in London. Federer, Djokovic and Nadal have already qualified for the eight-player field.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS ATP RANKING POINTS & PRIZE MONEY BREAKDOWN

The season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London will count as an additional 19th tournament for the eight players who qualify. Below is the ATP Rankings points and prize money breakdown:

MAIN DRAW OVERVIEW
• The Western & Southern Open, the seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 of the season gets underway in Cincinnati on Sunday, featuring eight of the Top 10 players and overall 24 of the Top 30 players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings.
• The draw includes the past seven tournament champions, including four-time winner Roger Federer (2005, 2007, 2009-2010), two-time titlist Andy Murray (2008, 2011) and Andy Roddick, who captured the trophy in 2003 and ‘06.
• Defending champion Murray led Novak Djokovic 6-4. 3-0 in last year’s final before the Serbian retired with a shoulder injury. The fourth-ranked Murray also beat Djokovic in the 2008 title match to win his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown. Cincinnati is the only North American ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event Djokovic is yet to win, having triumphed at Indian Wells (2008, 2011), Miami (2007, 2011-2012) and Canada (2007, 2011).
• Federer, who is the top seed at the Western & Southern Open for the first time since 2009, opens against the winner of Jarkko Nieminen and Alex Bogomolov Jr. The first seed Federer could face is No. 15 Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round. Kohlschreiber plays American wild card Brian Baker in a rematch of their fourth-round clash at Wimbledon, which the German won. In the quarter-finals, Federer could square off against eighth seed Juan Monaco, or No. 10 seed Mardy Fish, who finished runner-up in 2003 and 2010.
• In the second quarter of the draw, fourth seed David Ferrer will begin his campaign against a qualifier yet-to-be determined or Stanislas Wawrinka. Ferrer’s possible opponents en route to the semi-finals include 14th seed Kei Nishikori, a potential third-round matchup, and a dangerous quarter-final section that includes No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych, 11th seed Gilles Simon, rising Canadian Milos Raonic and Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who is playing for the Rogers Cup title in Toronto against Djokovic Sunday evening.
• Reigning titlist Murray headlines the third quarter, opening his title defence against Jurgen Melzer or wild card Sam Querrey. In the third round, Murray could meet 16th-seeded Andy Roddick, who has the most Cincinnati wins of any player in the draw with 29. Possible quarter-final opposition for Murray includes sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro, the resurgent Tommy Haas and wild card Lleyton Hewitt.
• In the final quarter, World No. 2 Djokovic will start his title quest against Robin Haase or Andreas Seppi, who held a two set lead over Djokovic in the fourth round of Roland Garros before the Serb stormed back to victory. The first seed Djokovic could face is 13th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, the Citi Open champion in Washington. Players looking to prevent Djokovic’s pathway to the last four include seventh seed Janko Tipsarevic, who fell to Djokovic in the Rogers Cup semi-finals, and No. 12 seed Marin Cilic. Both Tipsarevic and Cilic and potential quarter-final foes.

DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
• The top eight seeded teams receive a bye into the second round. A strong field is led by top seeds Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, looking to win their first match together in Cincinnati. Mirnyi won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 with Jonas Bjorkman, while Nestor is a four-time champion, triumphing in 1996, 1998 and 2004 with Mark Knowles, and 2009 with Nenad Zimonjic. Mirnyi and Nestor have won four trophies this season, highlighted by their title defence at Roland Garros.
• The No. 2 seeds are Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, three-time titlists at the event (2003, 2008, 2010). The Bryans completed a career Golden Slam by winning the London 2012 Olympics (d. Llodra-Tsonga) for their fourth title of the year. They were in the Toronto final on Sunday night.
• The other seeds are 3) Fyrstenberg-Matkowski, 4) Lindstedt-Tecau, 5) Paes-Stepanek, 6) Bhupathi-Bopanna, 7) Granollers-Lopez and 8) Qureshi-Rojer.
• Featured unseeded teams include Wimbledon champions Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen, two-time Grand Slam champions Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner and Olympic bronze medalists Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet.
