John Isner picked up an added bonus for winning the Winston-Salem Open title on Saturday... a free ride on a private jet to New York ahead of the US Open, courtesy of one of the tournament’s sponsors. Isner defeated Tomas Berdych in the final of the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tournament, with both players later making use of the jet to travel to New York.
"It takes away the stress and pressure of travelling and checking bags; it’s a nice way to go," reflected Isner, who also won the inaugural edition of his hometown tournament in 2011. "It makes the trip to New York so much easier. I can just leave my house 20 minutes before the flight, get right up to the plane, load the bags in and just sit back and relax. It’s another reason that makes this tournament so special."
Tournament Director Bill Oakes added, "The jet has actually been a great recruiting tool for us. It was available last year and we did fly a couple of guys up on Monday after Hurricane Irene went away. But it’s one of the things that we think makes us unique. We think it will be available for years to come."
Isner revealed that he would be taking the trip with his excited coach and chiropractor, adding, "I guess there’s still room for one more, if someone wants to go to New York they can hop on!"
