BEIJING PREVIEW – IMPRESSIVE FIELD FEATURES TOP 10 TRIO DJOKOVIC, FERRER, TSONGA
• This year’s China Open, which is one of 11 ATP World Tour 500 level tournaments, features nine of the Top 25 players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, including the Top 10 trio of World No. 2 Novak Djokovic of Serbia, No. 5 David Ferrer of Spain and No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France. Djokovic, who won the Beijing title in 2009-10, is playing in his first tournament since a runner-up showing at the US Open on Sept. 10 (l. to Murray in five sets). There are 500 valuable ranking points at stake this week awarded to the champion and 300 to the runner-up.
• There are four positions remaining for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London and four players (Ferrer, Tsonga, Gasquet and Cilic) in Beijing are in contention. Djokovic has already qualified for the season finale.
• The other seeds are No. 4 Marin Cilic of Croatia, a finalist in 2009 and last year, No. 5 Richard Gasquet of France who won his seventh ATP World Tour title in Bangkok on Sunday, No. 7 Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, No. 7 Tommy Haas of Germany and No. 8 Fernando Verdasco of Spain.
• On Monday’s schedule, there are seven singles matches, leading off on Stadium with No. 4 Cilic against Romanian wild card Marius Copil in a first-time meeting. Cilic has an 11-4 career mark in Beijing with a pair of runner-up showings in 2009 and last year. Copil, who is ranked No. 221, is making his main draw debut here. In the next match, No. 8 Verdasco and American Sam Querrey meet for the third time (tied 1-1). Verdasco is a two-time quarter-finalist here (2009, ’11) and Querrey is 1-2. There are two matches on Lotus Court with Chinese wild cards Ze Zhang and Di Wu meeting for the first time on the ATP World Tour. Zhang has won four of six other pro meetings (4-1 in futures) and Wu won the last meeting at the Beijing Challenger. In the other match, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and No. 6 Dolgopolov meet for the first time. Dolgopolov won his second career ATP World Tour title in Washington in August (d. Haas). He also was runner-up in Brisbane.

TOKYO PREVIEW – FORMER CHAMPS MURRAY, BERDYCH LEAD STRONG FIELD
• This year’s Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships is one of 11 ATP World Tour 500 level tournaments. There are four Top 10 players in the 32-player field. The top seed is World No. 3 and reigning champion Andy Murray, who makes his first tournament appearance since capturing his first Grand Slam crown at the US Open on Sept. 10 (d. Djokovic in five sets).
• The other seeds in the draw are: No. 2 Tomas Berdych, who won the title here in 2008, No. 3 Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, No. 4 Juan Monaco, who earned his first career hard court title in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, No. 5 Nicolas Almagro of Spain, No. 6 Milos Raonic of Canada, No. 7 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland and No. 8 Kei Nishikori, the top Asian and No. 1 Japanese player. Overall, there are five Japanese players in the main draw. Nishikori opens against countryman Go Soeda.
• There are four positions remaining for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London and five players (Berdych, Tipsarevic, Monaco, Almagro and Raonic) are in contention. Murray has already qualified. Murray, Berdych and Tipsarevic (as an alternate) played in last year’s tournament.
• There are four matches on Monday’s schedule, leading off with Albert Ramos of Spain against Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in a first-time meeting. Both players are playing in Tokyo. In the next match, Frenchman Benoit Paire takes on Berdych for the first time. Paire is one of the most improved players on the ATP World Tour this season, climbed from No. 95 last year to No. 52 this week. Paire reached his first ATP World Tour final in Belgrade in May (l. to Seppi). In the next match, Japanese wild card Hiroki Moriya meets No.7 Wawrinka for the first time. Moriya is making his main draw debut after losing in the qualifying three times. He is ranked a career-high No. 184 this week. Wawrinka was a quarter-finalist in his previous Tokyo visit in 2009. He is a four-time semi-finalist this year. In the final match, Viktor Troicki of Serbia and top Dutchman Robin Haase meet for the first time on the ATP World Tour. Troicki won both previous Challenger meetings in 2007.
