BEIJING THURSDAY PREVIEW - GASQUET HEADLINES AS SECOND ROUND WRAPS UP
• The last five quarter-final berths are up for grabs on Thursday at the China Open, with two more ATP World Tour matches among the line-up on the impressive National Tennis Stadium.

• First up is No. 5 seed Richard Gasquet against Chinese wild card Ze Zhang. It didn’t take long for Gasquet to get back in the swing of things after winning his seventh ATP World Tour title last week in Bangkok, beating Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden in straight sets in the first round.  Now he tries to keep his winning streak going against 22-year-old local wild card Zhang, who is 0-2 in his career against Top 20 players but did perform quite well in both matches (losing to then-No. 17 Ivan Ljubicic at Shanghai in 2010, 57 63 64, and then-No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga here in Beijing last year, 63 64). Gasquet and Zhang will be playing each other for the first time.

• Next up is Spain’s Feliciano Lopez against Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu. This could be a fairly unpredictable match-up - not only did they both win their first round matches by retirement, but their only previous meeting with each other also ended in retirement (Lopez was leading 5-0 first set in Dubai last year when Lu had to stop). Both men are seeking their first quarter-final here with Lopez making his third main draw appearance and Lu his sixth. Lu is also looking to win back-to-back ATP World Tour-level matches for the first time since Queen’s Club in June when he reached the quarter-finals.

• Over on Lotus Court, Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny faces South Africa’s Kevin Anderson (Youzhny won their only previous meeting in straight sets in August at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto) while Italy’s Andreas Seppi faces American Sam Querrey (Seppi leads the head-to-head 3-1 - Seppi won their only hard court clash indoors in Paris in 2007.

TOKYO THURSDAY PREVIEW - THREE TOP 10 PLAYERS HEADLINE SECOND ROUND ACTION
• The last six quarter-final spots are up for grabs on Thursday at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, with three current Top 10 players (and London hopefuls) among the line-up.

• First on Centre Court is No. 3 seed Janko Tipsarevic against Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli. Tipsarevic rallied from a set down to win his first match (1-3) in Tokyo on Wednesday, beating Gilles Simon after losing to Frenchman just four days earlier in the semi-finals of Bangkok. Chiudinelli has a few things going for him in today’s match-up though - not only did he win the pair’s only previous ATP World Tour-level meeting, but in the first round he beat recent first-time ATP World Tour champion Martin Klizan. The Swiss is 0-10 in his career against Top 10 players. Tipsarevic enters with a 51-20 match record on the season and he’s the only player with at least 20 wins on hard (25-10) and clay (21-7) courts this year. He is No. 9 in the 2012 Race to London points standings. He’s trying to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month.

• Next up is No. 2 seed and ’08 Tokyo champion Tomas Berdych against Colombia’s Alejandro Falla. Berdych is seeking his 50th ATP World Tour-level match win of the season (49-17) in this first-time meeting with Falla, and the World No. 6 will have to be on his game. Despite never going higher than No. 48 himself, Falla has four Top 10 wins to his credit, including two this year (and on big stages too - over Mardy Fish at the Australian Open and John Isner at Wimbledon). Berdych is in good form though, fresh off the semi-finals of the US Open and leading the Czechs into the Davis Cup final.

• Next up is No. 4 seed Juan Monaco against Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis. Monaco is coming off a milestone week in Kuala Lumpur, winning his first ATP World Tour hard court title (and his seventh overall ATP World Tour title, having won other six on clay). He also inched back into the Top 10, going from No. 11 back to his career-high of No. 10. Baghdatis knows a thing or two about being in the Top 10 - he went as high as No. 8 in 2006 - but in their only previous meeting it was Monaco who came out on top, quite handily too, in straight sets at Roland Garros in 2009.

• Last on is No. 8 seed Kei Nishikori and another former Top 10 player, Spain’s Tommy Robredo, in a first-time meeting. Robredo, a former World No. 5 who is working his way back up the ranking after missing the first half of the year due to injury, beat last week’s Bangkok semi-finalist Jarkko Nieminen in the first round and will now face last week’s Kuala Lumpur semi-finalist, Nishikori. The Spaniard has only played one Top 20 player since coming back to the tour, but he performed very well in that one, pushing David Ferrer to three sets in Bastad in the summer.
