A trio of Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contenders put more daylight between themselves and other season-finale hopefuls after Wednesday’s play at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Tomas Berdych (6th in the Race to London standings), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (8th) and Janko Tipsarevic (9th) all boosted their chances of qualifying for London on the same day that Richard Gasquet (11th) and Milos Raonic (13th) stumbled.
Tipsarevic (2,810 points) is now 385 points clear of 10th-placed Nicolas Almagro, who suffered a first-round loss earlier in the week, and 440 points clear of Gasquet. Should Tipsarevic win his third-round match Thursday to advance to his third straight quarter-final, he will move a further 90 points clear of Almagro, Juan Monaco (12th), Gasquet and Raonic.
The top eight singles players (and top eight doubles teams) qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Tipsarevic, who served as alternate last year (and played two inspired matches when an injured Andy Murray withdrew after his first match) is hoping this year to finish inside the Top eight for the first time.
On Thursday John Isner (14th), Marin Cilic (15th) and Stanislas Wawrinka (16th), who plays fellow Swiss Roger Federer, look to keep alive their outside hopes of qualifying for London.
Berdych, who is 1,000 points clear of Tipsarevic, has a very strong chance of qualifying. Eighth-placed Tsonga, however, is just 395 points clear of Tipsarevic and is under pressure to hold onto eighth spot.
