SHANGHAI MONDAY PREVIEW – THREE LONDON CONTENDERS HIGHLIGHT DAY TWO SCHEDULE

• There are 10 first round matches on Monday’s schedule at the Shanghai Rolex Masters with three seeds on Stadium leading the way. All three are among the Top 16 in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Race to London standings.

• In the first match on, American Sam Querrey, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Sunday, takes on Chinese wild card Zhe Li in a first-time meeting. Querrey is making his second appearance here and two years ago he lost in the second round to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The No. 2 Querrey (behind No. 12 Isner) is ranked a season-high No. 22 and he’s coming off a quarter-final in Beijing last week (l. to Lopez). Li is appearing in his first ATP World Tour main draw of the season and he’s ranked No. 380. Last year he lost in the first round here to Fernando Verdasco

• In the next match on, No. 10 seed and top Croat Marin Cilic, meets Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot for the third time. Cilic won both previous meetings, including a second round at Wimbledon in June. Cilic is No. 15 in the Race to London points standings. He is a two-time ATP World Tour winner this year, capturing titles at the Queen’s Club in London on grass and on home soil in Umag on clay. Cilic is 0-3 in Shanghai. Kubot is ranked No. 72 and he’s a three-time quarter-finalist this season. He is looking for his first main draw win in Shanghai (0-3) and two of his losses came in a third set tie-break.

• In the third match, No. 11 seed Richard Gasquet of France squares off with American qualifier Brian Baker for the first time. Eight days ago Gasquet won his seventh career ATP World Tour title in Bangkok (d. Simon). He is the No. 2 Frenchman (behind No. 6 Tsonga) and he’s No. 12 in the Race to London standings. If he wins his first round he will move past Juan Monaco to No. 11 in the race (for the time being). Baker is a leading candidate for ATP World Tour Comeback Player of the Year after missing nearly six years with five surgeries. The 27-year-old Nashville, Tennessee native began the year ranked No. 456 and he comes in No. 61. He reached his first ATP World Tour final in Nice in May.   He is playing in Shanghai for the first time.

• In the final match, the oldest player in the field, 34-year-old German Tommy Haas, plays No. 9 seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain for the second time. Haas won the previous meeting in May 2005 in the first round of Munich. Haas has made a big climb in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, from No. 205 at the end of last season to No. 21 this week. He won his 13th career ATP World Tour title on home soil in Halle in June (d. Federer). Almagro is a two-time winner this season and he enters with a career-high 53 match wins (53-18 record). He is No. 10 in the Race to London standings.

• There are four matches on Grandstand, including last year’s quarter-finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. On Union Pay Court 3, former World No. 5 Tommy Robredo takes on Russian qualifier Alex Bogomolov Jr.
