SATURDAY PREVIEW - RARE ALL-TOP FOUR SEEDS IN ATP MASTERS 1000 SEMI-FINALS
• The Top 4 seeds have all reached the semi-finals at the Shanghai Rolex Masters this week - the first time that has happened at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in over two years, since Toronto in August 2010 – and on Saturday they’ll all battle it out for spots in the final. It is the fifth time this year the top four seeds have reached the semi-finals: Umag, Estoril, Aust. Open, Doha.
• The first semi-final pits World No. 2 Novak Djokovic against No. 4 seed Tomas Berdych; both have looked strong getting to this round but this has been a troublesome match-up for Berdych in the past as Djokovic dominates the overall head-to-head series, 9-1 (including 8-0 on hard courts); and of all the players in the ‘Big Four’, Berdych has struggled the most against Djokovic (he has five wins over Federer, four wins over Murray and three wins over Nadal).
• Djokovic has an ATP World Tour-leading 68 match wins this year (Federer is next with 64). Djokovic is making his third appearance at this event (9-2 record), reaching the semi-finals in both previous attempts, in 2009 (l. to Davydenko) and 2010 (l. to Federer). He is trying to reach his 52nd ATP World Tour final (32-19 record) and his 23rd ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final (12-10). Berdych is 7-20 in his career against Top 2 players (3-13 against World No. 1s and 4-7 against World No. 2s). Berdych is making his first semi-final showing in fourth appearance at this event (7-3 record). He is trying to reach his 16th ATP World Tour final (7-8 record) and fourth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final (1-2).
• The second semi-final features World No. 1 Roger Federer against No. 3 Andy Murray; both players have dropped one set this week, Federer in the third round and Murray in the quarter-finals. Now Shanghai fans will see a rematch of this year’s Wimbledon and Olympic finals - and the final here two years ago. Murray has a 9-8 head-to-head lead, but the Scot is 5-1 against Federer in ATP Masters 1000 events and 2-0 in Shanghai (winning at the Tennis Masters Cup in 2008 and at this final in 2010).
• Federer will remain No. 1 for the 300th week on Monday. Federer is making his second appearance at this event (7-1 record), he was runner-up two years ago (l. to Murray in final). He is trying to reach his 109th ATP World Tour level final (76-32 record) his 34th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final (21-12 mark). He is currently tied for most ATP Masters 1000 titles since 1990 w/21 (Nadal has 21). Murray is 8-13 against World No. 1s but is much better against them away from Grand Slams (he is 1-5 against them at Grand Slams and 7-8 against them at all other tournaments). Murray is making his third appearance at this event (11-0 record). He won title in 2010 (d. Federer) and 2011 (d. Ferrer). Murray is trying to reach his 37th ATP World Tour final (24-12 record) and his 11th ATP Masters 1000 final (8-2).
