In saving five match points to defeat two-time defending Shanghai Rolex Masters champion Andy Murray on Sunday, Novak Djokovic made ATP World Tour Masters 1000 history.
The World No. 2 became the first player to win seven of the current Masters 1000 crowns, surpassing Roger Federer. The Swiss has won seven overall, with six of the events currently on the calendar. Djokovic and Federer also have the distinction of being the only players to reach all nine finals of the current Masters 1000 events.

With his victory in Shanghai, Djokovic won his third Masters 1000 title of the season, adding to triumphs at the Sony Open Tennis in Miami (d. Murray) and Rogers Cup in Toronto (d. Gasquet). The Serbian is in prime contention to claim the year-end South African Airways No. 1 Ranking, looking to chase down current World No. 1 Federer. Djokovic finished as the year-end No. 1 in 2011.
