Shanghai Thursday Preview: Federer Win Away From 300th Week At No. 1

Murray© Getty ImagesAndy Murray is undefeated in nine matches in Shanghai.

• There’s a big milestone on the line for the World No. 1 at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Thursday, though he’s just one of the marquee names in third round action on Stadium court. Overall, there are 13 of the Top 25 ranked players on the schedule.

• First on Stadium court is a match-up between Australian Open finalists as No. 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis; Tsonga, who reached the final Down Under in 2008, is one of the leading contenders for one of the last four spots in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, currently at No. 8 in the standings; Tsonga has beaten Baghdatis in straight sets in both of their previous meetings. The No. 36-ranked Cypriot, a finalist at the ’06 Aussie Open, has been as high as No. 8, and he has an impressive 18 Top 10 wins in his career (and he just snapped a 10-match losing skid against Top 10 players last week in Tokyo with a win over Juan Monaco).

• Next on is World No. 2 Novak Djokovic against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez; Djokovic is fresh off his fourth hard court title of the year in Beijing and has an ATP World Tour-leading 66 match wins on the year. In this match-up he has always had the upper hand, winning all four of his previous meetings with Lopez (losing just one set); additionally, Djokovic is 49-1 against non-Top 10 players this year (and the only loss came to a No. 11-ranked John Isner at Indian Wells, and by virtue of that win Isner cracked the Top 10); Lopez has a win over a Top 2 player though (over then-No. 1 Rafael Nadal at Queen’s Club in 2010) and is a two-time semi-finalist at this event.

• Next is No. 3 seed Andy Murray against Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov; Murray lost in the semi-finals of his title defense in Tokyo last week (to Milos Raonic) but has gotten a reprieve so far this week, a first round bye followed by a second round walkover (from Florian Mayer); today he puts his 9-0 tournament record on the line and gets this title defense underway against the talented Dolgopolov; Murray has beaten Dolgopolov in all three of their previous meetings (losing one set) but the Ukrainian did reach his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final here last year (he has since reached a second, at Madrid this year); he is also 0-6 in his career against Top 3 players.

• Last up is World No. 1 Roger Federer against No. 13 seed Stanislas Wawrinka; while Federer has dominated his good friend and fellow Swiss over the years, leading their head-to-head series, 11-1 (which includes an 8-0 record on hard courts with the loss of just one set), there may be some added pressure today as Federer can secure a stay at No. 1 by winning this match, which would give him 300 career weeks at No. 1; “I'm obviously excited,” Federer said. “It's a big number, even though 299 or 300 doesn't make a big difference for me. It's obviously a big match for me. Obviously it's not a final, so I'm not going to go in super nervous about it. It's just more the difficulty of playing a good friend. That adds to the special occasion.”; if Federer loses, however, he will still remain No. 1 after this week if Djokovic does not win the title. Wawrinka is 0-10 in his career against World No. 1s (0-21 in sets).

• The other four matches are on Grandstand, with two current Top 10 players (No. 7 Tomas Berdych and No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic), five former Top 10 players (John Isner, Marin Cilic, Fernando Verdasco, Radek Stepanek and Tommy Haas) and a former Top 20 player (Sam Querrey) all in action.
RACE TO LONDON -- There are four positions remaining for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, Nov. 5-12.
