Max Mirnyi recorded his 600th doubles match win on Thursday at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in tandem with Daniel Nestor. The 35-year-old Mirnyi is the 18th player in ATP World Tour history to reach the milestone.

The second seeds beat Tomas Berdych and Nenad Zimonjic 6-2, 7-6(5) in 79 minutes for a place in the quarter-finals. It was their 40th victory of the season (40-14 overall).

“It was a very close match,” Mirnyi told ATPWorldTour.com. “We found ourselves at sudden death deuce on three or four occasions. The second set tie-break could have gone either way, so to get my 600th match win in Shanghai, after months of getting closer, is very exciting.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about this milestone before the match since Cincinnati really! Today, I was trying to focus on my game as we came up against two very strong opponents. We had to be at our best to win and fortunately this milestone came along with it.”

Mirnyi, NestorMirnyi, who quit singles to play doubles full-time in 2008, admitted, “To be successful at doubles, I had to improve on my skills in order to partner full-time doubles players. That was the main goal. In order to play with Andy Ram (2009), Mahesh Bhupathi (2010) and Daniel (2011-12), all world class doubles players, I had to spend time a lot of time on the practice courts developing my first volley, placement of my first serve and working different strategies, helped my doubles play.

“Most of my success has come as a result of my serve, but also because of my overall physical ability and aggressive style of play. I try to be keen on the doubles court, intercepting balls and moving up the court.

“I would just like to thank all the doubles players I have played with over the years for getting me to this milestone. Hopefully, I can have a bit more success in the future.”

Mirnyi, who is 600-294 overall, has a 45-39 record in tour-level doubles finals. Mirnyi and Nestor will be competing at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 in London from 5-12 November.
