Shanghai Wednesday Preview: Top Four Seeds Headline Action-Packed Schedule

Federer© AFP/Getty ImagesRoger Federer plays qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu during Wednesday's night session.

• The ATP World Tour’s Top 3 players - Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray - are all in action on Wednesday as the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters wraps up. All three have won Grand Slam titles this season. Overall there are 13 matches on the schedule and 12 of them involve a Top 10 or Top 20 player, and the only one that doesn’t pits a former No. 2 and No. 5 player.

• Following first round byes, the Top 4 seeds all play their opening matches on Stadium court, beginning with No. 4 Tomas Berdych taking a 3-2 head-to-head lead against Italy’s Andreas Seppi. Berdych has never lost this early in Shanghai, reaching the third round in previous appearances the past three years. However, he has never gone further than the third round here; Seppi has six Top 10 wins in his career (four of those six came against No. 9s and No. 10s, and the two others - his two best - came on hard courts, over No. 4 Lleyton Hewitt in 2006 and No. 2 Rafael Nadal at Rotterdam in 2008). Berdych is  No. 6 in the Race to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London and he enters with a 50-18 record.

• Second on is World No. 2 Novak Djokovic against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in a first-time meeting. Djokovic has a lot of momentum right now - not only did he just win Beijing last week, he is now also the ATP World Tour’s match win leader for the year with 65 wins and a season-best 40 on hard courts. This week he has a shot at regaining the No. 1 ranking, if he wins the title and Federer loses before the quarter-finals. He does lead the 2012 Race points standings by 1,515 points over Federer. Dimitrov is 1-12 lifetime against Top 10 players (his lone win coming at Miami this year against Berdych) and Djokovic is a near-perfect 48-1 against non-Top 10 players this year with his only loss to No. 11 John Isner at Indian Wells - and Isner broke the Top 10 by winning that match).

• Next on is No. 3 Andy Murray against Germany’s Florian Mayer. After losing in the semi-finals of his title defense in Tokyo last week (losing to Raonic in the semi-finals after holding two match points), Murray gets his latest title defense underway, having won the ATP Masters 1000 event the past two years. In his only previous meeting with Mayer he won in Rome last year, 16 61 61. Mayer has nine career Top 10 wins, including two here: No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny in 2010, and No. 2 Rafael Nadal last year (his third career Top 3 victory) en route to the quarter-finals.

• At night, World No. 1 Roger Federer takes on Chinese Taipei qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu for the second time. Federer won in straight sets in the first round at Wimbledon in 2009. This is Federer’s first tournament since a quarter-final loss at the US Open to Berdych on Sept. 5. He did get back on the winning track in Davis Cup play (Sept. 14-16) with a pair of straight-set clay wins over the Netherlands. If Federer reaches the quarter-finals he will be guaranteed a 300th week atop the South African Airways ATP Rankings next Monday. In his last appearance two years ago he was runner-up (l. to Murray).

• There are four matches on Grandstand, leading off again with top Asian and No. 14 seed Kei Nishikori vs. American Sam Querrey, who is 2-1 against the Japanese star. No. 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga  looks for his second win against countryman Benoit Paire. No. 11 Richard Gasquet looks to even his career mark (1-2) against Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic. In the final match, an all Serbian encounter features No. 6 seed Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki (tied 1-1).

RACE TO LONDON -- There are four positions remaining for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, Nov. 5-12.
