VIENNA SATURDAY PREVIEW - DEL POTRO & TIPSAREVIC FACE SURPRISE SEMI-FINALISTS

- Top 10 players and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopefuls Juan Martin del Potro and Janko Tipsarevic will try to thwart a pair of surprise runs in the semi-finals Saturday of the Erste Bank Open.

- The first semi-final pits top seed Juan Martin del Potro against Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller; after an historic - and marathon - win in his opening match, del Potro found his range in a big way in the quarterfinals on Friday, brushing aside Marinko Matosevic, 62 62; now he faces another unseeded player in Muller, who took out No. 4 seed and Austrian No. 1 Jurgen Melzer en route to the semi-finals, and if the pair’s only previous meeting is anything to go by, it could be a tough one - del Potro beat the Luxembourger in a tight four-setter at the Australian Open in 2009.

- The 24-year-old del Potro is making his third appearance at this event (6-1 record); reached 2nd Rd. in 2008 (withdrew prior to match vs. Kohlschreiber); runner-up in 2011 (l. to Tsonga in final). The Argentine is playing in his eighth ATP World Tour semi-final of the year (3-4 record). He is trying to reach his 17th ATP World Tour final (11-5). del Potro is No. 7 in the race to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (Top 5 have qualified). He has held serve all 26 service games this week (saved all eight break points). Muller is making his first appearance here this week and he’s playing in his second ATP World Tour semi-final of the year. He’s trying to reach his fourth career ATP World Tour final (0-3 record). He has lost his last 10 matches against Top 10 players (his last win coming in the fourth round of the 2008 US Open against No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko).

- The second semi-final features No. 2 seed Janko Tipsarevic against Slovenian qualifier Grega Zemlja, who has had a breakthrough week, not only reaching his first ATP World Tour semi-final but also scoring his first Top 20 win along the way (d. No. 20 Haas). Now he will try to beat his first Top 10 opponent against No. 9 Tipsarevic, who hasn’t lost a set this week - and who beat the Slovenian in straight sets in their only previous meeting in the third round of the US Open last month. Tipsarevic is making his third appearance at this event (5-2 record); he reached semi-finals in 2009 (l. to Melzer). The 28-year-old Serb is playing in his eighth ATP World Tour semi-final of the year (3-4) and he’s looking to reach his 11th ATP World Tour final (3-7). Tipsarevic is No. 9 in the Race to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals (Top 5 have qualified). Zemlja is making his second main draw appearance at this event (4-1 record); reached 2nd Rd. in 2010 (l. to Chela). He is playing in his first career ATP World Tour semi-final. At No. 70, he is Slovenia’s No. 1 (Slovenia’s No. 2 is No. 89 Bedene, who Tipsarevic beat in QFs). Zemlja is 0-4 against Top 10 players (losses to Roddick in 2010, Monfils in 2011 and Federer and Tipsarevic in 2012 - only won one set, against Monfils at Wimbledon in 2011).
