BASEL FRIDAY PREVIEW - FEDERER & DEL POTRO HIGHLIGHT QUARTER-FINAL SCHEDULE

• Two Top 10 players - and two of the six players who have qualified for the eight-man Barclays ATP World Tour Finals so far - are among the quarter-final line-up at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday.

• The first quarter-final pits No. 3 seed Richard Gasquet against No. 6 seed Mikhail Youzhny. These two have a few parallels: they are both former Top 10 players (Gasquet has been as high as No. 7, Youzhny No. 8) and both are motivated by more than just reaching the semi-finals in Basel (Gasquet is in the hunt for ranking points as he can still qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals, Youzhny is seeking his 400th career match win). Youzhny has dropped only six games in his first two matches this week. The Russian has had the edge in their head-to-head over the years, winning four of six meetings - though one win was via retirement.

• Next up is No. 2 seed Juan Martin del Potro against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson. With Rafael Nadal officially withdrawing from the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday, del Potro snapped up the sixth spot in the eight-man event. Now he can focus on the last two weeks of the regular season, beginning with the match-up against Anderson. Del Potro has won all three of their previous meetings, including two during last year’s fall indoor season; Anderson has two career Top 10 wins to his name - against Novak Djokovic at Miami in 2008 and Andy Murray at Montreal in 2011 - but he is 0-6 against the Top 10 this year (and has lost eight in a row).

• Next on is Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov against French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu. Both players are perfect in ATP World Tour quarter-finals this year, Dimitrov going 3-0 (reaching his first three ATP World Tour semi-finals at Queen’s Club, Bastad and Gstaad) and Mathieu reaching the semi-finals of Gstaad, his first time reaching the quarter-finals or better at an ATP World Tour event since missing the entire 2011 season with a knee injury. The 30-year-old Mathieu, who was a former World No. 12, is No. 101 this week. Last season he was unranked. This is a first-time meeting.

• Last up is World No. 1 Roger Federer against France’s Benoit Paire in a first-time meeting. Federer has dominated his hometown tournament, winning 31 of his last 32 matches here (winning the title in 2006-07-08, 2010 and last year- his only loss here in that stretch came in the ‘09 final to Novak Djokovic). Now he tries to move one step closer in his 11th quarter-final in 13th Swiss Indoors appearance. He is 9-1 lifetime in quarter-finals in Basel with his lone loss to Tim Henman in 1999. Paire is appearing in his fifth quarter-final of the season and he reached his first ATP World Tour final in Belgrade (l. to Seppi) in May. He has an uphill battle against the World No. 1: not only has he never beaten a Top 10 player (0-5), he hasn’t beaten a Top 20 player in his young career (0-12).

• MIKHAIL EYES 400TH WINMikhail Youzhny tries to become the 67th player in the Open Era to win 400 matches in his career. Youzhny has a career record of 399-287. Only three Russians – Yevgeny Kafelnikov (609), Nikolay Davydenko (454) and Marat Safin (422) - have won at least 400 matches.

*RACE TO LONDON -- There are two positions remaining for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, Nov. 5-12. No. 11 Gasquet will add 90 pts. by reaching the SFs.
