BASEL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW – FIVE-TIME CHAMP FEDERER, DEL POTRO LEAD SWISS INDOORS FIELD

• This year’s Swiss Indoors Basel features five-time champion and World No. 1 Roger Federer and Vienna winner Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who reached the semi-finals here in 2008.  Basel is one of 11 ATP World Tour 500 level tournaments. Federer is making his 13th appearance in his hometown tournament and he owns a 43-7 career match record. Federer also reached the final three times (2000-01, ’09). He is the only former champion in the 32-player field.

• The remaining seeds are: No. 3 Richard Gasquet of France, No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 5 Andreas Seppi of Italy, who is coming off a title in Moscow, No. 6 Mikhail Youhzny of Russia, No. 7 Florian Mayer of Germany and No. 8 Viktor Troicki of Serbia. There are three positions left for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, Nov. 5-12, and del Potro, Gasquet and Wawrinka are among the Top 16 Race standings. Federer has already qualified for the year-end finale.

• On Monday’s order of play there are four singles matches, including Federer and Gasquet. In the opening match, Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov takes on Frenchman Julien Benneteau for the first time. Kuznetsov, who is making his Basel debut, has compiled his best results on the Challenger circuit with four titles. He is 2-4 on the ATP World Tour this season. Benneteau is a two-time finalist this season and in his previous visit here three years ago, he lost in the first round. In the next match, Federer takes a 2-0 record against qualifier Benjamin Becker of Germany. Becker was a quarter-finalist here in 2008. Federer is No. 1 for a record 301st week in his career and he leads the ATP World Tour this season with six titles. In the final match, top Dutchman Robin Haase plays No. 3 Gasquet, who won the previous meeting at the London Olympics in July.

VALENCIA MONDAY PREVIEW – LONDON FINALS CONTENDERS MONACO, ISNER, FOUR SPANIARDS IN ACTION

• There are six first round matches on Monday’s schedule at the Valencia Open 500, with a pair of contenders for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and four Spaniards in action.

• In the first match on Agora, 21-year-old Belgian David Goffin takes on Spaniard Pablo Andujar for the second time in a Spanish tournament this season. In April, Andujar won 76 64 in the first round of Barcelona. Andujar comes in with a 19-27 match record on the season (8-14 on hard courts). In April he repeated his title in Casablanca. Goffin has been one of the ATP World Tour’s rising stars, jumping from No. 174 at the end of last year to a career-high No. 45 this week with a 15-13 match record. He reached a pair of ATP World Tour quarter-finals in Chennai and Winston-Salem. In Grand Slam play, he advanced to a personal-best fourth round at Roland Garros (l. to Federer in four sets). He is making his debut in Valencia.

• In the next match on, No. 4 seed and last year’s finalist Juan Monaco of Argentina takes on wild card and former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt for the first time.  Monaco is No. 12 in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Race points standings and ranked No. 10. The 28-year-old Monaco is putting together the best season of his career with four titles in five finals. He comes in with a 38-17 match record on the season (11-8 on hard). Hewitt is making his Valencia debut and last week he reached the quarter-finals in Stockholm (l. to Almagro). The 31-year-old Aussie is ranked No. 91 with a 15-13 match record on the season. He’s looking to break a 10-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents. His last win came over No. 2 Roger Federer in the final of Halle in June 2010.

• In the third match on, Spaniards Fernando Verdasco and wild card Tommy Robredo meet for the 11th time. Robredo leads 6-4 overall but Verdasco is up 3-1 on hard courts, including their previous meeting here in the quarter-finals three years ago. Verdasco is making his 10th straight Valencia Open appearance (16-8 record) and he won the title in 2004 (d. Montanes) when it was played on clay. He’s lost in the first round three times (2003, ’07, ’11). This season the 28-year-old Madrid native reached the final in Acapulco in March (l. to Ferrer) and he’s ranked No. 24 this week. He’s played well on home soil, reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona (l. to Nadal) and the quarter-finals at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid (d. Nadal first time, l. to Berdych).  Robredo, who missed the first five months of the season after undergoing February leg surgery, is 6-4 lifetime in Valencia. He was a semi-finalist in 2008 and quarter-finalist in his last appearance in ’09. The 30-year-old Robredo ranked as low as No. 470 and he’s climbed to No. 114 this week. He’s won two Challenger titles and reached two other finals. His best ATP World Tour result was the quarter-finals in Bastad in July (l. to Ferrer).

• In the fourth match on, No. 5 seed and top American John Isner takes on Italian Fabio Fognini for the first time. Isner is putting together his best season with a 44-19 match record, winning a pair of ATP World Tour titles and breaking into the Top 10 for the first time. He’s ranked No. 11 and No.14 in the Race to London points standings. Isner lost in the first round here last year in his debut. Fognini is a two-time finalist this year (Bucharest, St. Petersburg) and he comes in with a 22-23 match record.

• In the final match on, Spaniard Albert Ramos meets American qualifier Rajeev Ram for the first time. Ramos reached his first ATP World Tour final in Casablanca in April and Ram is a two-time semi-finalist this season (Newport, Los Angeles). Ram is making his Valencia main draw debut and Ramos is 0-1.
