BASEL SATURDAY PREVIEW – TOP THREE SEEDS IN SEMI-FINALS, LED BY FIVE-TIME CHAMPION FEDERER
• The semi-finals at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Saturday feature the top three seeds, led by the World No. 1 and five-time champion. This is only the third time since 1992 the top three seeds have advanced to the semi-finals in Basel, the last coming in 2008 (Federer, Nalbandian, del Potro). Prior to that it happened in 1992 (Korda, Becker, Lendl).

• The first semi-final is between No. 3 seed Richard Gasquet and No. 2 Juan Martin del Potro, who has won four of the previous five meetings, including twice this year, in the quarter-finals of Marseille and the final in Estoril. Gasquet is appearing in his first Basel semi-final and he’s trying to earn one of the two remaining spots for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He is 10th in the Race standings and he could move to 9th if he wins the title. Gasquet is also trying to become the first Frenchman to reach the final/win the title here since Yannick Noah in 1987 (d. Agenor). The 24-year-old del Potro qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday and the Argentine is making his second semi-final appearance in Basel (2008). He won his career-best 60th match of the year on Friday. He comes in with a seven-match winning streak after earning his third title of the season last Sunday in Vienna (d. Zemlja).

• In the second match, World No. 1 and five-time Basel champion Roger Federer takes a 5-0 career mark against French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu. Federer has dominated his hometown tournament, winning 32 of his last 33 matches here (winning the title in 2006-07-08, 2010 and last year- his only loss here in that stretch came in the ‘09 final to Novak Djokovic). He looks to move one step closer in his 10th semi-final in 13th Swiss Indoors appearance. He is 8-1 lifetime in semi-finals in Basel with his lone loss to David Nalbandian in 2002. Federer is a match win away from tying John McEnroe for 4th place in the Open Era with 875 career match wins (see below). Mathieu is appearing in his first semi-final in Basel and second semi-final on Swiss soil this year. In July, the 30-year-old Frenchman reached the semis in Gstaad. He missed last season with a knee injury and in January he was unranked. The former World No. 12 will jump from No. 101 to around No. 61 with his result so far. His last final came in Hamburg in July 2009 (l. to Davydenko) and last title came on Swiss soil in Gstaad in 2007 (d. Seppi).
