BASEL THURSDAY PREVIEW - DEL POTRO CONTINUES BID TO QUALIFY FOR LONDON

• The second round wraps up Thursday at the Swiss Indoors Basel, one of two ATP World Tour 500 events taking place in this, the second-to-last week of the regular ATP World Tour season.

• First on Centre Court is France’s Benoit Paire against Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot. Paire pulled off an upset in the first round, beating No. 5 seed Andreas Seppi, who was coming off his second ATP World Tour title of the year in Moscow and had set a new career-high ranking of No. 22 this week. Paire comes in ranked a career-high No. 46. Next up for him is Kubot, against whom he won his only previous meeting 63 06 64 on grass in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June. The winner of this will face World No. 1 and five-time Basel champion Roger Federer in the quarter-finals.

• Next up is Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko against French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu. Both players have been working their way back up the rankings after some major injury struggles over the last few years - Davydenko is a former World No. 3 currently at No. 42, Mathieu is a former World No. 12 currently at No. 101. And Davydenko seems to have more of his form back, trying to reach his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the year (Mathieu is going for his second). Davydenko also leads the head-to-head, 6-3, including a win in their only meeting so far this year.

• Next up is No. 2 seed Juan Martin del Potro against American Brian Baker. The 24-year-old del Potro is the leading contender to become the next qualifier for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, currently No. 7 in the race - he can qualify by reaching the final this week (and maybe even with a semi-final or quarter-final finish, depending on the results of Nicolas Almagro in Valencia and Richard Gasquet here in Basel). Del Potro is playing Baker for the first time - Baker has one Top 10 win but it came more than seven years ago at the 2005 US Open (over then-No. 9 Gaston Gaudio); also, the No. 8-ranked del Potro is an immaculate 25-0 against non-Top 50 players this year.

• Last up is South Africa’s Kevin Anderson against Australia’s Marinko Matosevic, who has compiled his best results of his career. He had breakthrough in Delray Beach in March, making it all the way to his first ATP World Tour final as a qualifier. The man who stopped him is the one on the other side of the net today. Anderson won that - their only ATP World Tour-level meeting - but while he has only maintained his level since then (he was No. 36 then and No. 39 now), Matosevic has been on the rise since then, shaving more than two thirds off his ranking (he was No. 173 then and now career-high 51).

• On Court 2, No. 6 seed Mikhail Youzhny, who is the top Russian on the ATP World Tour, meets Aussie Matthew Ebden for the first time.  Youzhny is closing in on 400 career match wins (398) and he’s trying to reach his 10th quarter-final of the season. Ebden’s best result this year is a quarter-final in Atlanta in July (l. to Muller).
