BASEL WEDNESDAY PREVIEW - TOP THREE SEEDS ALL IN ACTION ON CENTRE COURT

• The first round wraps up and second round begins Wednesday at the Swiss Indoors Basel, one of two ATP World Tour 500 tournaments taking place in this, the second-to-last week of the regular season.

• First on Centre Court is No. 5 seed Andreas Seppi against France’s Benoit Paire. Seppi is fresh off his second ATP World Tour title of the season in Moscow, rallying from 63 42 down to beat Thomaz Bellucci in the final and become the first Italian in 10 years to win two ATP World Tour titles in a season (Davide Sanguinetti did it in 2002). This week he has set a new career-high of No. 22 and will try to keep his winning streak going in his first round meeting against Paire. The Italian won the pair’s only previous meeting handily on clay in the final of Belgrade in May.

• Next up is No. 2 seed Juan Martin del Potro against Colombia’s Alejandro Falla in another first round match. The 24-year-old del Potro has won two of the previous three meetings (both on clay) and Falla’s win came on hard courts in the first round of the US Open in 2006. Del Potro is the leading contender to be the next qualifier for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, at No. 7 in the race. The Argentine has a chance to qualify this week and he is coming off his third title of the season on Sunday in Vienna (d. Zemlja). Falla is looking for his fifth career Top 10 win (4-17 record), the third this year.

• Next up is World No. 1 Roger Federer against Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci. This is the city where Federer was born and it’s one of his best tournaments, capturing the title five times and winning 30 of his last 31 matches here (his only loss in the last six years came to Novak Djokovic in the 2009 final). He won the title in 2006-07-08, 2010 and 2011). He continues to fight Djokovic for year-end No. 1 with a second round meeting against Bellucci. Federer won the pair’s only previous meeting, though it was a come from behind 36 63 64 win at Indian Wells in March.  Bellucci, who is coming off his first indoor final in Moscow on Sunday (l. to Seppi), is 0-7 lifetime against Top 10 players on hard courts (losing the six other such matches in straight sets).

• Last up is No. 3 seed Richard Gasquet against Swiss wild card Marco Chiudinelli. Now No. 11 in the race, Gasquet still has a shot at qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, and he continues his quest for the season-ender as he faces Chiudinelli, who is trying to reach his second quarter-final in Basel. In 2009, he advanced to the semi-finals. The head-to-head is tied, 1-1, and their last meeting was actually here in 2009, with Chiudinelli winning - but the Swiss has lost 18 matches in a row against Top 20 players (Gasquet was No. 57 when Chiudinelli beat him - his last win over a Top 20 player came against David Ferrer in Davis Cup play in February 2007).

• On Court 2, there are three matches, including No. 7 seed Florian Mayer of Germany, Swiss wild card Henri Laaksonen and young Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (vs. Frenchman Julien Benneteau).

VALENCIA WEDNESDAY PREVIEW – REIGNING CHAMP, THREE SEEDS, FORMER NO. 1 IN DAY FOUR ACTION

• There are five matches on Wednesday’s schedule at the Valencia Open 500, leading off with the reigning champion on Agora. Overall there are two first round and three second round matches on the order of play. Three (seeds) players in contention for the final two spots in the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London are also in action.

• In the opening match, reigning champion Marcel Granollers takes on Czech Republic qualifier Jan Hajek in the first round. They met five years ago in the second round at the Monza Challenger in Italy and Hajek prevailed in a third set tie-break on clay.  Granollers was a finalist here two years ago (l. to Ferrer) and last year he went one step further by taking the title (d. Monaco). The 26-year-old Spaniard comes in with a 20-21 match record on the season and his best result was a runner-up in Umag (l. to Cilic). He reached a career-high No. 19 on July 23 and this week he is No. 25. In doubles, he and countryman Marc Lopez qualified for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. They are No. 5 in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings. Hajek is ranked No. 113 and his best result was the semi-finals in Bastad in July (l. to Almagro).

• In the second match on, big-serving No. 8 seed Milos Raonic meets Luxembourg native Gilles Muller for the second time. They first met in the second round at Wimbledon last year and the Canadian retired after five games after suffering a hip injury. The 21-year-old Raonic, who is the youngest player in the Top 20, is putting together a career-best season with a pair of ATP World Tour titles and two runner-up showings. Raonic leads the ATP World Tour in service games won (93%) and is No. 2 in aces with 950 (behind Isner’s 958).  He is No. 13 in the Race points standings to London (ranked No. 15). Muller comes in with a 21-20 match record and in July he advanced to his third career ATP World Tour final in Atlanta (l. to Roddick in three sets). He also was a semi-finalist in Vienna last week (l. to eventual champ del Potro).

• In the third match on, Madrid native Fernando Verdasco takes a 4-3 career lead against No. 7 seed Marin Cilic of Croatia. Cilic won the last meeting two weeks ago in Shanghai and he is up 3-2 on hard courts. Verdasco is making his 10th straight Valencia Open appearance (17-8 record) and he won the title in 2004 (d. Montanes) when it was played on clay. This season the 28-year-old left-hander reached the final in Acapulco in March (l. to Ferrer) and he’s ranked No. 24 this week. He’s played well on home soil, reaching the semi-finals in Barcelona (l. to Nadal) and the quarter-finals at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid (d. Nadal first time, l. to Berdych). Cilic is a two-time ATP World Tour winner this year (Queen’s Club in London, Umag) and he comes in with a 38-17 match record. He is trying to make a run for one of the two remaining spots for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He is in 15th place.

• In the final singles match on, Aussie wild card Lleyton Hewitt, who made his Valencia debut on Monday with a 63 64 win over No. 10-ranked Juan Monaco, meets qualifier Ivan Dodig of Croatia for the first time. Hewitt looks to reach his second ATP World Tour quarter-final in as many weeks. Last week in Stockholm he reached the quarters (l. to Almagro). The 31-year-old Aussie is ranked No. 91 with a 16-13 match record on the season. Dodig is trying to reach his third quarter-final of the year (Zagreb, Queen’s Club). He is ranked No. 110.

• On Pista 1, No. 5 seed/top American John Isner looks for his second win against Belgian David Goffin. In August, Isner defeated Goffin in straight sets in the quarter-finals of Winston-Salem en route to repeat title. Isner is No. 14 in the Race points standings and he enters with a 45-19 match record on the season. He is a two-time champion (Newport, Winston-Salem). Goffin is one of the young up-and-coming stars on the ATP World Tour and he is ranked a career-high No. 45 this week. He is trying to reach his third ATP World Tour quarter-final. He also advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros.
