FRIDAY PREVIEW - LONDON LINE-UP SET, ALL EYES ON QUARTER-FINALS IN PARIS

• With all eight spots in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals known now, all eyes are on the last eight at this week’s BNP Paribas Masters, with a golden opportunity for six players to break through to earn their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title or - for two - to win a second one (and in Paris)..

• This is the first time three Frenchmen (Llodra, Simon, Tsonga) have ever been in the quarter-finals of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament (since 1990).

• The first quarter-final pits No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych against France’s Gilles Simon; Berdych has been in strong form the last few months, winning 22 of his last 26 matches, and this is his best ATP Masters 1000 event, the only one he has ever won (as a 20-year-old back in 2005); Simon has reached the quarter-finals of his home ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time and could be big trouble for Berdych, not just because he is playing in front of his home crowd, but he has won four of the pair’s six previous meetings (including their last two, which were both on hard courts).

• Next up is No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic against Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz; Thursday was a big day for both players - Tipsarevic qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, while Janowicz got his first Top 10 win (over No. 3 Andy Murray) and subsequently became the first Polish player ever to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event. The 21-year-old Janowicz, the youngest player left, is trying to reach his first career ATP World Tour semi-final.This is a first-time meeting.

• Next up is No. 4 seed David Ferrer against No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Surprisingly, this is only their third meeting (tied 1-1) with Tsonga winning on grass and Ferrer winning on clay courts. Thursday was a big day for Tsonga too, as the French No. 1 qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals - the eight-man field is now complete (with Tsonga and Tipsarevic the last two in); while this is Tsonga’s best ATP Masters 1000 event - it’s the only one he has been to the finals of before, winning the title in 2008 and finishing runner-up last year. Ferrer is trying to go deep into the draw for the first time, going 0-3 in quarter-finals here (in 2005, 2007 and 2011).

• Last up is American Sam Querrey against French wild card Michael Llodra; Querrey is having the week of his life, scoring his first Top 3 win in the second round (over No. 2 Novak Djokovic) and now through to his third ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final - he is going for his first Masters 1000 semi-final today (losing in QFs in ’08 Monte Carlo,’07 Cincinnati). Llodra has been to the semi-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 and it was right here in 2010 (holding match points before falling to eventual champion No. 5 Soderling). The French veteran is the lowest-ranked player left at No. 121 and he’s not faced a break point in his first three matches (in 32 service games). He also has been a giant-killer this week, taking out No. 8 Juan Martin del Potro in the third round, and he did win the pair’s only previous meeting in straight sets on clay at ATP Masters 1000 Madrid in May 2011.

• DOUBLES SPOT LEFT – While the eight singles spots for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals are set, there is one doubles position open. Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski play Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in the quarter-finals on Friday with the winner qualifying for the season finale in London.
