THURSDAY PREVIEW - TSONGA ONE WIN AWAY FROM QUALIFYING FOR LONDON

• The seventh spot - and even the eighth spot - in the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS in London could be determined on Thursday as the high stakes continue at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.

• First on Court Central is No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson; Berdych has qualified for London, but with only one of the Big Four still in the mix in Paris, he’s looking good to go deep again at the only ATP Masters 1000 event he has ever won (back in 2005); looking at history, Berdych is a strong favorite today, winning all three of their previous meetings - but Anderson did defy an 0-3 head-to-head in the last round against Gasquet, and his two Top 10 wins have come at ATP Masters 1000 events (Djokovic at Miami in 2008, Murray in Montreal last year).

• Next up is No. 15 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan against France’s Gilles Simon; this is a first-time meeting, somewhat rare given both have spent most of the year in the Top 20 together. Both have won ATP World Tour titles this season and both are looking to finish in the Top 20 rankings. Nishikori has a 4-8 record against Top 20 opponents while Simon is 4-13. The winner will advance to his first career quarter-final in Bercy.

• Next on is No. 3 seed Andy Murray against Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz. As the only Big Four player left in the draw, this is a golden opportunity for Murray to finally get over his quarter-final hurdle here. He has been to that round four times before, but never further; but to get to that round a fifth time he’ll have to get past Janowicz, who came out of qualifying and has beaten two Top 20 players – No. 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 15 Marin Cilic – without facing a break point thus far. This is  Janowicz’s second time playing a Top 10 player - his first time also came against Murray in a Davis Cup tie three years ago that the Scot won in straight sets

• Next is No. 7 seed Juan Martin del Potro against French wild card Michael Llodra; The Argentine has already qualified for London and he comes in with an 11-match winning streak since the US Open. He is 4-0 lifetime against Llodra, who has dropped in the rankings this year, from No. 47 at the start of the season to No. 121 this week. He is the lowest-ranked player left in the draw.  Llodra seems to have come alive again this week, winning back-to-back matches for the first time since February - and this is the only ATP Masters 1000 event he has reached the semi-finals (in 2010).

• The first night match is No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro; there are big implications in this match. Tsonga will become the seventh player to qualify for the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS if he wins this match. Things couldn’t have lined up better for him, as he is not only 5-0 lifetime against Almagro, but the Spaniard is 1-20 against Top 10 players on hard courts (the only win coming against Berdych at Indian Wells in March). This is also Tsonga’s best ATP Masters 1000 event, winning the title in 2008 and finishing runnner-up last year.

• Last up is No. 4 seed David Ferrer against No. 16 seed Stanislas Wawrinka; with Federer and Djokovic out, Ferrer could go into London next week as the ATP World Tour’s match win leader for the year - he currently has 68 (tied with Federer, two behind Djokovic’s 70). But he’ll have to get past Wawrinka, against whom he is 5-3 (though Wawrinka leads 2-1 on hard courts).
