TUESDAY PREVIEW – FORMER CHAMPIONS TSONGA & BERDYCH HEADLINE DAY TWO ACTION
• Two Top 10 stars, both former BNP Paribas Masters champions, highlight play on Court Central on Tuesday. One has qualified for the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS while the other is getting close to claiming a spot in next week’s season finale in London.

• First on is France’s Jeremy Chardy against Spanish qualifier Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a first round match. Chardy has had a strong last few months, going 8-4 during the summer hard court season and breaking into the Top 30 for the first time after the US Open; he has since dipped slightly to No. 34 but will now try to get that momentum back on French home turf as he takes on Garcia-Lopez, who won their only previous meeting routinely, though it was on clay courts, in April 2009 in Houston.

• Next on is Spanish qualifier Roberto Bautista-Agut against French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu; after missing more than a year of action with a knee injury, former World No. 12 Mathieu started playing tournaments again in January and comes in ranked No. 64, his highest in over two years (since July 19, 2010 at No. 52). He jumped from No. 101 after reaching the semi-finals in Basel last week. The 30-year-old Frenchman is playing in his home ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in three years and has a first-time meeting with Bautista-Agut, who has made a climb himself into the Top 100 at No. 82 with success on the Challenger circuit with three titles. He’s also qualified seven times in the main draw this season on the ATP World Tour.

• Next up is the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek against French wild card Michael Llodra, another first round match; these two veterans have both had their best ATP Masters 1000 results right here in Paris - this is the only Masters 1000 event where Stepanek has been to the semi-finals or better more than once (and he has done it three times - a runner-up in 2004 and a semi-finalist in 2005 and ‘09), while Llodra reached his only ATP Masters 1000 semi-final here two years ago.The head-to-head is firmly in Stepanek’s favor, as he is 5-1 against Llodra (and 2-0 on indoor hard courts). They met nine days ago in the final round of qualifying in Basel and Stepanek won 76 63.

• In the evening session, No. 6 seed and 2008 champion/last year’s runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau; Tsonga is a leading candidate to be the next man to qualify for the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS. He leads the overall head-to-head series 4-3 but Benneteau has won their previous two indoor hard court meetings (in Lyon in 2008 and Marseille in 2010). Tsonga won at Roland Garros in their other French meeting three years ago.

• Last up is No. 5 seed and 2005 Bercy winner Tomas Berdych against Italy’s Andreas Seppi; Berdych has already qualified for the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS but is looking to keep his recent roll going, having won 20 of his last 24 matches coming into Paris (including winning his second ATP World Tour title of the year in Stockholm on Oct. 21). Seppi also won his second title of the year on the same day in Moscow, his first career indoor title. He comes in ranked a career-high No. 22. He has six career Top 10 wins to his name but Berdych has won their last three meetings in straight sets (all on hard courts).

• On Court 1, there is a full line-up with six matches, led by the seeded trio: No. 13 Marin Cilic of Croatia, No. 15 Kei Nishikori of Japan and No. 16 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzlerland.
