WEDNESDAY PREVIEW – TOP TRIO DJOKOVIC, MURRAY, FERRER HIGHLIGHT COURT CENTRAL

• The second round of the BNP Paribas Masters continues Wednesday with 11 more matches, led by the  three Top 5 players in the field: Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and David Ferrer. The trio have all qualified for next week’s BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS in London. There are six contenders in action.

• First on Court Central is No. 4 seed David Ferrer against fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers; Ferrer has had a phenomenal year, winning a career-high six ATP World Tour titles (tied for most this year with Federer) and racking up 67 match wins coming into this week (third-most this year, after Djokovic and Federer); he opens with Granollers, whom he has beaten in straight sets in all four of their previous meetings, including 61 62 and 63 62 60 scorelines in their last two meetings Ferrer is 13-3 this season against his countrymen with all three losses coming to Rafael Nadal.

• Second on is No. 12 seed Richard Gasquet against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson; Gasquet is one of the leading contenders for one of the two remaining spots in the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS, but he’ll need to reach the semi-finals this week to have a chance - but things are looking good at least for his opening match today, as he has won all three previous meetings with Anderson in straight sets (including a 64 76(4) win in the exact same round here a year ago).

• Next is No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic against American Sam Querrey; by virtue of Federer’s withdrawal from this tournament, Djokovic not only secured a return to No. 1 next week, he also is guaranteed the year-end No. 1 ranking for a second year in a row. He looks to continue his 10-match winning streak since the US Open against Querrey, against whom he is 4-0 lifetime. Djokovic, who has reached his last five finals since falling in semi-finals (and bronze medal match) at London Olympics, is 51-1 against non-Top 10 players this year (and the only loss was to a No. 11-ranked Isner at Indian Wells) and Querrey is 0-9 lifetime against Top 3 players.

• Next is No. 10 seed John Isner against French wild card Michael Llodra; these two may have similar memories from Bercy. Llodra reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final here in 2010 (holding three match pts. vs. Soderling) and Isner reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final last year here (holding three match pts. vs. Tsonga). In March, Isner reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells. Both of the pair’s previous meetings came indoors in 2010 (Isner winning in Basel, Llodra here).

• In the evening session, No. 3 seed Andy Murray takes a 4-0  career record against French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu. Murray is looking for his first ATP World Tour title since the US Open, and he’ll have to step it up this week as he has never been beyond the quarter-finals in six previous tries here. Mathieu is a former No. 12 who came back at the start of the year after missing over a year with a knee injury - he made the semi-finals of Basel last week and has jumped to a season-high No. 64 ranking.  He is 1-20 against Top 3 players (and the only win came via retirement against Davydenko in 2007).

• Last up is No. 14 seed Milos Raonic against France’s Jeremy Chardy in a first-time meeting. Raonic still has a shot at the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS. However he’ll have to make it to the final here to  have a chance, and he has never been past the quarter-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event. Raonic lost his opening match here last year and he is No. 13 in the Race to London standings.
• Among those in action on Court 1 are No. 7 seed Juan Martin del Potro (who has already qualified for the BARCLAYS ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS), No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic (who can secure a spot there by reaching the final) and No. 9 seed Juan Monaco and No. 11 seed Nicolas Almagro (who both need to reach the final here to have a chance at qualifying for London.
