London Sunday Preview - Semi-final Line-up Repeat Of Olympic Finals Day

London, England

• The semi-finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday feature the same players in the London Olympics medal matches three months ago. They will now go head-to-head with the winners advancing to the last ATP World Tour final of the year. On the Olympic finals day August 5th, Juan Martin del Potro beat Novak Djokovic in the first match to win the bronze medal, then Andy Murray beat Roger Federer to earn the gold medal. This is the second time (2010) in three years the top three players are in the semi-finals at The O2. This is also the first time since 2004 the semi-finalists have won at least one career Grand Slam title.

• In the first semi-final, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic takes a 6-2 head-to-head advantage (5-1 on hard courts) against No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro.  In their last meeting in the quarter-finals of the US Open in September, Djokovic won 62 76 64. They played once before in a season finale, in 2008, and Djokovic won the round robin match 75 63. Djokovic is playing in his third semi-final at this event. He captured the title in 2008 (d. Simon in SF, Davydenko in F) and lost in the semi-finals two years ago (l. to Federer). Del Potro is playing in his second semi-final. He was runner-up in 2009 (d. Soderling in SF, l. to Davydenko in F).

• Djokovic is trying to win his 74th ATP World Tour match win of the year (which would tie him with Ferrer as the ATP World Tour’s match wins leader in 2012). Del Potro has won a career-high 65 matches this year (previous-best was 54 in ‘09) and he is the first Argentine to win at least 60 matches since Guillermo Coria (60) in 2003. Del Potro has five career wins over World No. 1 opponents (and is 5-6 overall):
 - 2009 Miami   QF  d. No. 1 Nadal, 64 36 76(3)
 - 2009 US Open  Final  d. No. 1 Federer, 36 76(5) 46 76(4) 62
 - 2009 ATP World Tour Finals  RR d. No. 1 Federer, 62 67(5) 63
 - 2011 Davis Cup 4th Match d. No. 1 Djokovic, 76(5) 30 ret. (back injury)
 - 2012 Basel   Final  d. No. 1 Federer, 64 67(5) 76(3)

• In the second semi-final, No. 2 seed and two-time defending champion Roger Federer meets No. 3 seed Andy Murray, who has a 10-8 head-to-head record, winning their last two meetings in straight sets (62 61 64 in the Olympics gold medal match and 64 64 in the Shanghai semi-finals). The winner will advance to a third British final of the season. Federer’s last win came in the Wimbledon final in July. This is their fifth meeting of the year (tied 2-2). Federer has won two of their three previous meetings in the season finale. Murray won in ’08 round robin play in Shanghai and Federer won here in London (in round robin play - 36 63 61 in ‘09 and 64 62 in ‘10). Federer is playing in his 10th semi-final at this event (7-2). He has won a record six titles (2003-04, ’06-07, ’10-11) and was runner-up to Nalbandian in ’05. The only times he lost in the semis was in 2002 (l. to Hewitt) and ‘09 (l. to Davydenko). Murray is playing in his third semi-final, having lost in 2008 (l. to Davydenko) and ‘10 (l. to Nadal). He is trying to become the first British player to reach the final in tournament history (since 1970).

• Federer is the most successful player in year-end tournament history with six titles (Lendl and Sampras are next with five titles each) and 41 matches won (Lendl is next with 39). Federer is also the third player to reach 10 or more semi-finals at this event (Lendl 12 and Sampras 10). Federer has 71 match wins this year, the fifth time in his career he’s won 70 or more matches: (92 in 2006, 81 in 2005, 74 in 2004 and 78 in 2003).

• Federer is 14-2 on British soil this year (losses: Murray at Olympics, del Potro on Saturday). Murray is 14-3 on his home soil, losing his opening match at Queen’s Club (l. to Mahut), reaching final at Wimbledon (l. to Federer), winning the gold medal at Olympics (d. Federer) and 2-1 so far here. Murray is trying to become the third player to beat Federer three or more times in two seasons (Nalbandian did it once in 2003):
 - Nadal  three times before: 2006, 2008, 2011
 - Djokovic two times before: 2009, 2011
 - Murray once before:  2008

DOUBLES SEMI-FINALS - FIRST-TIME DOUBLES CHAMPIONS GUARANTEED
• There will not only be a first-time champion team at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Monday, there will be two first-time individual doubles champions - none of the eight men left in the semi-finals have won this title (two have reached the final four previous times):

- Paes:  0-4 in finals (w/Zimonjic in 2005, w/Bhupathi in 1997, 1999 and 2000)

• In the first semi-final, No. 3 seeds and Australian Open champions Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, the highest seeds left, take on No. 5 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna. In their only previous meeting in the final of ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai on Oct. 14, Paes and Stepanek won 67 63 10-5. In the the evening doubles semi-final,  No. 6 seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez square off with No. 8 seeds and Wimbledon champions Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen, who won their only previous meeting, a five-set nail-biter in the first round of Wimbledon in June.
