London Tuesday Preview - Federer Win Away From Record As Group B Gets Underway

London, England

Federer© AFP/Getty ImagesRoger Federer is going for a seventh title at the circuit finale this week.

• The four players of Group B take the court Tuesday in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals,  with the World No. 2 one win away from the match win record at the season-ending event.

• In the first singles match, No. 2 seed and six-time champion Roger Federer brings a 5-0 career record against No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic.  Federer has won four of those meetings in straight sets. In their first of two Grand Slam matches, Federer survived a four-hour, 27-minute marathon in the third round of the Australian Open in 2008, 67(5) 76(1) 57 61 108 (and it could have gone longer, asTipsarevic led 40-0 serving at 8-all when Federer snuck out a break and served the match out). In their last meeting in May in the semi-finals at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Madrid, Federer won 62 63 en route to the title.

• Federer has compiled an outstanding season with six ATP World Tour titles, including his 17th Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon and three ATP Masters 1000 titles while returning to No. 1 on July 9 for 17 weeks (passing Sampras’ all-time No. 1 record of 286 weeks, now at 302 weeks).  Djokovic took over No. 1 on Monday. This is Federer’s 11th appearance at the season finale (39-7 record). He has won this title a record six times, in 2003-04, ’06-07, 2010-11 (Lendl and Sampras are next with five titles). Federer is also tied with Lendl for most match wins at this event with 39 (With a victory today he would own the record for most match wins at this event). Federer is 8-2 in opening round robin matches in this event.

• Tipsarevic has followed his first Top 10 season from 2011 with another Top 10 campaign in 2012, highlighted by his third career ATP World Tour title in Stuttgart, two more finals at Chennai (l. to Raonic) and Gstaad (l. to Bellucci) and five more semi-finals (including two ATP Masters 1000 events). Tipsarevic is making his second appearance at this event (1-1 record). He stepped in as an alternate last year after Murray withdrew (l. to Berdych after holding match point at 6-5 in third set tie-break, 26 63 76(6), then in second match beat Djokovic, 36 63 63 - his first win over a reigning World No. 1).

• In the night session, No. 4 seed David Ferrer enters with a 5-2 record against No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro, who is the only player here this year who wasn’t here last year (and Rafael Nadal the opposite). Ferrer has won their last three meetings (and both of their 2012 meetings in straight sets - 63 63 in Miami, 63 62 63 at Wimbledon). Ferrer has put together the best year of his career, winning an ATP World Tour-leading seven titles (Federer is next with six) and 72 match wins (Djokovic is next with 71). The 30-year-old Valencia resident enters with a two-tournament, 10-match winning streak with titles in Valencia and ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris, his maiden Masters 1000 title). Ferrer is trying to become the first player to win 30+ matches in a season on both clay and hard since Nadal in 2007 (Ferrer has won 32 matches on clay and 29 on hard. Nadal won 31 on both surfaces that year).

• Ferrer is making his fourth appearance at this event (6-6 record) and his best result was a runner-up in 2007 (l. to Federer in final); also reached the semi-finals last year (l. to Federer).
Ferrer could pass Nadal for the No. 4 ranking after this event (by reaching final with two or three RR wins - if he goes 1-2 in RR and qualifies for SFs, would need to win title).  Del Potro has put together his third Top 10 season, first since ’09. He has won four ATP World Tour titles (including three on indoor hard courts). He is 18-2 indoors this year. He has a 4-4 record at this event, reaching the final in his last appearance in 2009 (l. to Davydenko in final).

• In doubles, the opening match from Group B features No. 5 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, coming off a title at ATP Masters 1000 Paris on Sunday, against No. 8 seeds and Wimbledon champions Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen in a first-time meeting. In the night session doubles match, No. 3 seeds and Australian Open champions Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek square off for the first time against No. 7 Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer. All four teams are playing here together for the first time.
