Andy Murray is one of 15 candidates in the running for Sports Illustrated Fans’ Choice Inspiring Performer of 2012. Fans have been invited to rank their Top 5 choices, and the winner will be featured in the 17 December issue of the magazine.
“Scotland’s favourite son broke through in 2012,” Sport Illustrated wrote of his nomination. “He defeated Roger Federer in straight sets to win Olympic gold, then beat Novak Djokovic in an epic five-set thriller to win the US Open men’s final, the first major of his career and the first for a male Brit since 1936.”
Murray ranked among the Top 5 going into the final day of voting, alongside NBA breakthrough star Jeremy Lin and Olympians Mo Farah, Missy Franklin and Oscar Pistorius. Other nominees include Gabby Douglas, Jessica Ennis, Peyton Manning, Misty May-Treanor & Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Bradley Wiggins.
Also in Sports Illustrated, 11-time NBA All-Star Charles Barkley recently named Murray as his Sportsman of the Year.
