Sixth seed Robin Haase made a winning start at the Aircel Chennai Open on Monday, defeating Indian hope Yuki Bhambri 7-5, 6-3 in 85 minutes. The two-time quarter-finalist won 78 percent of his first serve points and saved all four break points he faced.
It was a return to winning ways for the 25-year-old Haase, who finished the 2012 ATP World Tour season with a run of seven straight defeats. He goes onto face Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene, who cruised past Joao Sousa of Portugal, 6-3, 6-2.
Eighth seed Go Soeda opened with a 6-1, 6-2 dismissal of Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy. The Japanese player, who reached the semi-finals of this ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tournament as a qualifier last year (l. to Tipsarevic), broke serve four times and lost only 12 service points in the 59-minute match.
