Federer Aims To Level Record Against Murray

For the first time, World No. 2 Roger Federer and third-ranked Andy Murray are meeting in the semi-finals of a major tournament. Murray has a winning record against the Swiss, but Federer has won all three of their previous Grand Slam clashes, each with a trophy on the line.

DOWN TO TOP FOUR – For the second year in a row the top four seeds are in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, led by World No. 1 and two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic, World No. 2 and four-time winner Roger Federer, No. 3/reigning US Open champ Andy Murray, and No. 4 seed David Ferrer. Last year Rafael Nadal was in the semi-finals along with Djokovic, Federer and Murray.

This is the fourth time in the Open Era at the Australian Open the top four seeds are in the semi-finals:

BIG FOUR DOMINANCE – In 30 of the past 31 Grand Slam tournaments (since ’05 Roland Garros), a Grand Slam tournament title has been won by one of the current Top 4 ranked players – Djokovic (5), Federer (13), Rafael Nadal (11) and Murray (1). The only exception was at the 2009 US Open where Juan Martin del Potro won his first Grand Slam crown.

FEDEX ATP HEAD2HEAD – Murray owns a 10-9 head-to-head advantage over Federer although the Swiss is 3-0 in Grand Slam play (all in finals). Federer won three of the five meetings last year, including the semi-finals at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. Murray’s biggest win came in the Olympic gold medal match at Wimbledon.
