Organisers of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament and the city of Rotterdam have joined forces to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ATP World Tour 500 event.
Tennis related items will emerge around the host city over the next two weeks in the build-up to the official opening of the tournament, in Ahoy, on 11 February by two-time titlist Roger Federer.
The first temporary landmark, ‘The Giant Racquet’, 20 by six metres in size, can be found in Hofplein square in the centre of Rotterdam.
“We wanted to do something really special this year,” said Tournament Director Richard Krajicek.
“Forty years of loyalty between Ahoy, ABN AMRO and Rotterdam, marks a very special relationship. Building upon the knowledge, experience and mutual respect between the parties, we were able to build one of the major sports events in The Netherlands. To celebrate this, we wanted to make sure that everybody visiting Rotterdam knows that the international stars of tennis are in town.”
Rod Laver, Arthur Ashe, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl are some of the former legends who have competed at the tournament, which has been sponsored by ABN AMRO for a record 40 years. Current ATP World Tour stars Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Federer have also made appearances in recent years.
