Rafael Nadal and good friend Juan Monaco once again shined on the doubles court at the VTR Open in Vina del Mar Thursday, defeating Guillaume Rufin and Filippo Volandri 6-2, 7-6(4) to reach the semi-finals.

Monaco and Nadal won 86 per cent of their first serve points and did not lose serve to advance in 75 minutes. The Argentine/Spanish pair play Carlos Berlocq and Leonardo Mayer next. The Argentines eliminated fourth seeds Oliver Marach and Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 6-4.

Nadal is playing his first tournament in seven months, having been sidelined with a left knee injury. He was victorious in his return to singles action on Wednesday with a straight-sets win over Federico Delbonis.

In Montpellier, top seeds Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray cruised into the Open Sud de France semi-finals, dismissing Frenchmen Florent Serra and Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-1. For a place in the final, Fleming and Marray face Johan Brunstrom and Raven Klaasen. The Swedish/South African duo knocked off No. 4 seeds Jamie Delgado and Ken Skupski 6-2, 6-3.

Two other seeded pairs were also upset in quarter-final action. Marc Gicquel and Michael Llodra upended second-seeded Eric Butorac and Paul Hanley 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, while Jamie Murray and John Peers dispatched third seeds Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot 6-4, 6-2.

At the PBZ Zagreb Indoors, Flavio Cipolla and Somdev Devvarman saved all 10 break points they faced en route to defeating Benjamin Becker and Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. Cipolla and Devvarman advance to play No. 2 seeds Julian Knowle and Filip Polasek. The Austrian/Slovak tandem battled past alternates Aljaz Bedene and Jaroslav Pospisil 5-7, 6-3, 12-10.
