Two-time former champion Xavier Malisse made a winning start at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Monday, defeating Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-3.
The eighth-seeded Malisse, who triumphed at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in 2005 and 2007, saved nine of the 10 break points he faced. The Belgian has a 26-10 event record.
Ivan Dodig upset fifth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-3 to win his opener. Dodig capitalised on all four of his break point chances to take the first-time meeting in 57 minutes.
Third seed Sam Querrey led countryman Michael Russell 6-2, 2-2 when Russell retired from their evening-session clash with a leg injury. Querrey is making his fifth appearance, with his best showing coming in 2008 when he reached the semi-finals.
Evgeny Donskoy also advanced in first-round action with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Steve Darcis.
Ernests Gulbis, the 2010 titlist, successfully qualified into the main draw.
