Haas, Isner Ease Into Delray Beach QFs; Gulbis Edges Querrey

Haas, the 2006 champion, won 23 of his 25 first serve points to claim victory in 67 minutes. The 34-year-old German, who finished runner-up at the SAP Open in San Jose two weeks ago (l. to Raonic), will face Ivan Dodig next. The Croat beat Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 7-5.
Top seed John Isner defeated Go Soeda 7-6(2), 6-2, hitting 15 aces and breaking Soeda twice in the second set to advance in 75 minutes. In the quarter-finals, Isner will clash with reigning champion Kevin Anderson. The sixth-seeded South African continued his comeback from elbow surgery by topping Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in one hour and 42 minutes.
Ernests Gulbis knocked off third-seeded wild card Sam Querrey 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4), overcoming a 0-4 deficit in the final set to level his FedEx ATP Head2Head series with the American to a 2-2 mark. Gulbis won his first ATP World Tour title at the event in 2010 and will play fellow qualifier Daniel Munoz-De La Nava for a place in the semi-finals.
Munoz-De La Nava upset two-time titlist and eighth-seeded Xavier Malisse 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3. Both players won 93 points during the match, but the Spaniard prevailed in two hours and three minutes to reach his second ATP World Tour quarter-final.
France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis also advanced in second-round action. Roger-Vasselin defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-5, while lucky loser Berankis rallied past wild card Jack Sock 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
