SATURDAY PREVIEW – MURRAY, BERDYCH, TSONGA OPEN CAMPAIGNS ON STADIUM

• The seeds on the bottom half of the draw make their first appearance of the tournament Saturday as the second round continues at the Sony Open Tennis with 16 matches on tap, highlighted by World No. 3 Andy Murray who begins his bid to capture a second title here and potentially move his ranking to No.2.

• The first men’s match on Stadium features No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who looks to even his head-to-head with Victor Troicki. The No. 3 Serb has won all three hard court encounters, while Tsonga has won two on clay. Tsonga comes in with a 12-4 match record on the season, all on hard courts. Last week reached he his third quarter-final of the year at ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells (l. to Djokovic). He is playing here for the sixth time (11-5) and is a three-time quarter-finalist. Troicki handed Pablo Andujar his sixth opening-round exit of the season after defeating the Spaniard 62 63 on Thursday. He is playing here for the sixth time (8-5) and his best result was the fourth round in 2009 and ’11. He owns a career 3-45 (0-2 in 2013) record vs Top 10 opponents, losing 31 straight since his last win over No. 7 Tsonga in the semi-finals of Bangkok on Oct. 3, 2009.

• Next up No. 2 seed Andy Murray, who won the previous meeting against top Aussie Bernard Tomic. This match pits the No. 1 in break points saved Tomic (76%) against the No. 3 in break points converted Murray (50%). Murray comes in with a 13-2 mark on the year and he reached the quarter-finals of ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells (l. to del Potro). The Scot won one of his eight career ATP Masters 1000 titles here in 2009 (d. Djokovic). Tomic set this second-round meeting after edging qualifier Marc Gicquel 75 76(3) on Thursday. He has a 2-14 (0-3 in 2013) career record vs Top 10 opponents, losing 10 straight since his last win over No. 9 Fish at 2011 ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai.

• The last match of the evening session is a battle between two left-handers born one day apart as the No. 25 seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain faces Alejandro Falla of Colombia for the second time (Verdasco leads 1-0). The 29-year-old Colombian is one day older than the Spaniard. The former  World No. 7 Verdasco has been bothered by neck pain the last month and is looking to win his first match since reaching the third round at the Australian Open. He is playing here for the 11th consecutive year (12-10) and is a two-time quarter-finalist (2009-10). Falla improved to 5-3 here as he broke Japan’s Go Soeda five times in his 75 61 win on Thursday. He is looking to reach the third round here for the second time, also in 2007 in tournament debut (l. to Stepanek, d. Haas in 2R) as a qualifier.

• On Grandstand, there are four matches; with No. 8 Richard Gasquet, who has a 4-7 tournament record and his best result was the fourth round last year (vs. qualifier Olivier Rochus). No. 20 John Isner, who has a 5-6 record in Miami with his best result the fourth round in 2011 (vs. Ivan Dodig). No. 14 Milos Raonic, who is playing here for the third time (1-1), withdrew prior to third round match year against Andy Murray (vs. qualifier Guillaume Ruffin); and No. 4 Tomas Berdych, who was a finalist in 2010 (l. to Roddick), has a 17-8 mark here (vs. Daniel Gimeno-Traver).
